Most people don’t understand how to use them, and no one borrow my laptop ever. I love it.

When IBM brought the first Thinkpad out, it seemed crazy. But I don’t think there were any touchpads on the market, so it was either Thinkpad or external mouse. The pad was revolutionary and very intuitive, but I still find myself using a tiny external wireless mouse 99% of the time.

I think the manual transmission is actually just using tab keys and space bar/shift keys, though.

Some of 90's HP Omnibooks had a weird mouse thingy. The t i n y mouse thingy is normally hiding in the laptop but it pops out by pressing the mouse release button. It’s permanently attached to the laptop with a lever that senses the movement by sliding and turning. The lever is a bit flimsy but you can operate it without any flat surface.

I’d say the command line is the manual transmission of computers with the cursor controllers being more like the accessory controllers. A mouse would be analog nobs (still the most prefferable). The trackpad could be touch screen interfaces. And the trackpoint would be the only occasionally helpful steering wheel controls, because yeah its great for some things like controlling the radio or cruise control, but faux paddle shifters on some CVTs and the stupid fucking voice command buttons on the bottom of my girlfriends CR-V steering wheel that always hit my knee by accident are useless. God, I hate her car... where were we again ?

So, I do logo design on the side (not as much as I’d like in recent months) . I’ve used a Macbook Pro + Illustrator for this for 10+ years. In the past, I thought that I was giving up control/precision by just using the laptop’s controls for this , but a few years back, I bought a nice external mouse specifically to use for my design work , and realized that I much prefer just using the MBP’s (admittedly great) trackpad over a mouse. Who’dve thunk it?

Truth. I’ve lost count of the number of confused, annoyed, and weirded-out coworkers ever since I started disabling the (not just inferior but low quality by normal pad standards
) pad on my last two trackpoint-equipped devices.

I don’t find it so, I dread having to use the trackpad, even with the gestures and whatever.

I hear you there, but just like ATs, the GUI has it’s place. Newbies have less of a chance of fucking up your machine or being less productive (grinding gears and stalling) and then there are the times where it is just more convenient (like sitting in traffic).

Same and I actually got an external logitech BT trackpad for when its docked to a second screen which was surprisingly adequate . The trackpad on my new surface book also is very nice. Thankfully Windows machines have started to move to more gestural actions rather than the stupid scroll bars on the side and bottom of the pad with separate buttons for clicking.

The trackpoint on my Latitude E6510 is nice, but it tends to lose its mind if the laptop gets bumped for whatever reason, so I end up just turning it off.
It seems to be a constant.

Can’t say I use the actual terminal/command line anymore. But while using OSX I often use the quick search “ command-space” to just type the program I need vs using the trackpad. It baffles my wife but I do it automatically. I only ever have to type the first 2 or 3 letters and hit enter. I only use the trackpad for web surfing. Pretty much keyboard for as much as possible.

holy crap, how’d you acquire that PowerSeries? How do you have space for this stuff?
one of my IRC buddies has an NCR System 3450 which can be optioned with 4x486 processors! I never really strayed away from x86 systems so most of my older rigs ranged from 486-Pentium III rigs.
![]() 11/01/2018 at 16:14 |

I bought some (including the one of the PowerSeries) from the factory when I was a summer employee there. The other I found when my university was cleaning their corners and had thrown it away. Both are parked in my parents house disguised as “design objects”...
The factory had a still working PowerSeries machine at that point. It had the working power supply from the machine that I bought. They couldn’t retire that machine as it was running a license server for their welding line robots. It was pretty stupid idea to use such obscure machine to run the license server. I think they retired it after the Saab assembly line was disassembled after 2003 but unfortunately no-one contact me about the machine’s retirement plan.
My parents also have a small swimming pool that has been disabled and permanently covered. It’s a good place for a secret computer museum.
Some problem with vintage multiprocessor PCs is that most Microsoft OS’s don’t know how to use the processors. What OS does that NCR thing have?
I once saw mid 80's workstation that had 6x 286 processors. I was really temp ted to buy it but it was huge (maybe made by Digital ) and my parents didn’t then have a large house. It was using some weird OS but I cannot remember what it was.
