Kind of interesting that it was built by highschool kids.

“ 1954 Buick camper..... no title. This was built in Northwood Iowa high school in 1972 as a shop project. Framework of camper Is steel 2 x2 square tubing so structure is in good condition. Floor of car has some rust. Nailhead motor is smaller cubic inch and is stuck so overall condition unknown. Nice blank canvas and certainly an one of a kind! $2000.00 or best offer. Please look at pictures as they tell the story. “

I don’t remember how, but I think I accidentally ran across this exact camper ad during the past two weeks already.

I distinctly remember thinking that the ruined driver’s position visibility was the biggest dealbreaker.

Kids used to do more and were expected to do more I feel back then. I mean being an eagle scout then sure meant a lot more than it does now   I feel.

Scouting is a bit of an anachronism nowadays. In my own experience, I attended Wood Badge about twenty years ago and I had an awful experience. It’s modeled after a military leadership school, how they fool with your head and give you the information that you need sort of on the under so you miss it and I was like, hey: I took this course for real when I was in the Army and I finished on the Commandant’s List. Are you an eagle scout? I was at an activity at my church last night and someone told me a story where in his nephew’s Marine Corps boot camp, everyone who was an eagle scout received a stripe. Not sure if that’s true...

I don’t think $2000 is a bad price for that vehicle. If you had a proper shop to fool with it, install a more modern small block V8 and and a turbohydramatic transmission, and you’d have a fun project.

on the one hand as an eagle scout and former scout master I can honestly say that very little of that information will be retained and the training of the old ways are long gone (the scouts are expected to do their own merit badges? HA!) but on the other hand, I would feel legitimately like I had a leg up in boot camp on account of my outdoor experiences that scouting brought me.  So, maybe?

I don’t mean to knock scouting at all. In my own life, it really never was a fit. I was a scout at around age 13 for a while, and the scoutmaster was an openly gay man in a committed relationship and there was no such thing as two-deep leadership and he and I were alone together a number of times and he was not a pedophile and everything was fine. (Now, there was another guy who has been confirmed as a full-featured creeper...) That troop was chartered through a church I used to belong to and I was the scribe. Then I stopped going and didn’t pick it up again until I was an adult and joined a different church where scouting was the Official Activity and I never quite fit in.* I think scouting’s not for everyone, and it makes a big difference when a boy’s father is an eager scouter and counsels with his son and they earn the eagle as a team.

What was your eagle project?

*At the beginning of that time, I was in the Army overseas and many of the boys’ dads were away on deployment, so the boys appreciated adult male leaders because their dads were downrange. I went to a scout camp that summer and had a great time bonding with the boys and horsing around with them. There, too, no two-deep leadership and a boy named Chris and I did a fifty-miler together over five days. Great experience.

It cetainly has potential. I like the way the sun has faded off the paint on the hood except for where the loft is blocking the sun.

My eagle project was collecting water barrels and distributing them to the hopi tribe in northern Arizona. I know it’ s supposed to be local community but an opportunity presented itself. It was a strange experience to see that every house have free satellite TV but no running water.

I always understood the eagle project to be entirely about service and I don’t see why going to the rez and doing service there wouldn’t be 100% appropriate. You have a lifetime season pass for seats in the Eagles’ Nest at every court of honor.
