UPDATE: SOLD FOR $11,111 :( Hoping for sub-$10k cars is a lost cause on BaT.
The bids aren’t astronomic on this one (at least that’s what I think), so do it!

I think it is approaching a fair price. It’s not low mileage and not a period AMG car, just a cool car. Get it below 10K and probably do OK. Lots of style for the money.

Gotcha.
Yes, I’d buy it if I was rich. Then I’d hit up swanky restaurants with an entourage of 80s - mid 2000s gangsta cars in a H awaian suit.

A nice Miami Vice pastel suit would work well in this. I am not knocking it, I’d drive it with pride - maybe one of the coolest cars you can buy for that money, and it is at the bottom of its depreciation curve.

Now how about THIS one?

Lovely. Great color combo. That would be one to buy and drive, as restoration costs are insanely expensive. Enjoy it. Hard to put a price on it, maybe 40K? BaT can be a crapshoot. You could sink 100K+ into one of these with a real restoration.

I see it brought 11K. A little high due to BaT, but not insanely. As they say in Sports Car Market, well bought and well sold. Lots of flash and substance for the price of a used Corolla.

I still think that’s a good price for that much style. I’d love to drop off the kids at school in that.
I think my next car will come from Bring a Trailer. I’d rather spend $11k on something like that, than whatever $11k could get me in my local market. And the information you get in those listings is like, above and beyond any other car listing on the interwebz. I just have to accept that I’d be bidding against other people who are equally interested in an otherwise esoteric car.

Agree on the buy and drive - seems like it looks okay from 25 feet, but up close it needs everything.
These cars don’t come up frequently, so it’s hard to tell pricing . Hemmings only has 3 of them - 2 basket cases ($10k and 20k), plus a concours-quality cabriolet going to auction (in a stunning green no less).
I was guessing $25-30k, but that’s just a SWAG.

BaT is its own universe, hard to predict. When a Mini brings 80K and a 70s Ford wagon brings over 40K, you never know what might happen.
A car like this, with some patina, is how I would want it. Kind of like my fintail, looks perfect from 10 feet, but you can drive it and not fret about a small rock chip etc.

So true about BaT - my view on them is a bit colored, because 99% of the auctions that I actually follow are pre-1975 cars. Sometimes those cars get bid up to the stratosphere, other times they flop - it’s a mixed bag.
Unlike the endless stream of 911's and M cars that go through BaT - they seem to have a captive audience for those.

I think the premium on BAT is at times because you don’t have to search these cars out. It’s a lot easier to find cars like this than to scour classifieds or other auctions. Plus it could also be a case of someone wanting something like this and not realizing that one was for sale until it came up on BAT because they hadn’t/didn’t look for one. BAT has turned into an auction site and it’s not unrepresented for cars at an auction to command premiums on their “fair market value.”

In other words, people with too much money and not enough sense.

Good point about the demographics - a car like this is invisible to younger buyers, and the tech/financebros who want to show off at their local c&c have no interest. It might not go far. The typical fan of one of these probably remembers it being new.
I am not a big fan of BaT, it has encouraged a new wave of speculation and flippers, just like the bullshit real estate market in some areas.

That and the this is exactly what I dreamed about as a kid, I don’t care if I spend more than what it’s worth because I now have the money.

I file that under the lack of sense category :)
In some way, BaT is kind of showing the expanding socio-economic gap we all enjoy on this continent.

I’ve wanted to buy from BaT for those exact reasons , but it seems like I’m not gonna be able to do that for a while.
First off, not a lot of cars on BaT are from Canada.
So everything is ~30% more expensive because of the currency difference between CAD and USD . Then there’s the hassle of importing something.
If I’m looking for a third car or something and have a good amount of money for this, I can wait and semi-seriously look for a car I like and afford.
But it seems like too much of an up hill battle for buying a first or even a second car.

You’re right, even for me... if my car explodes tomorrow I’ll be driving our Volvo wagon for the foreseeable future. Not a bad car, don’t get me wrong. But I’ll be stashing pennies away and waiting for the day I can justify bidding on something interesting from BaT.
