How do you forget  that quickly that there’s a wall in the next lane?

So there’s a couple of things going on here. First, as a cyclist, I know we’re supposed to have equal access to the roads, but I do my best to avoid multilane roads like this where there is no shoulder to move to. Maybe this guy can’t avoid this stretch on his route, but if at all possible, he should avoid that road.

Second, and this is something he can do and should, he needs to signal his lane change. That would n’t help with ramming the wall, but it would help if someone is behind him.

Also , ouch.

I’m kind of wondering why he’s in the middle lane at all.

I see now--it looks like he was in the left lane, and then another lane merges from the left. Still not an ideal place to be biking, and it looks like the cars are going at highway speeds.

That’s what I’m thinking. If I’m in his position, I’m scared to death. I saw how fast the cars were going around him.

Then again, I was almost killed by a car, so I may be a touch extra scared in these situations.

I don’t bike seriously, and when I do, it’s on neighborhood streets, though I have a 10-mile route I ride. There is one street I ride on that is 35, and even that scares me. I can’t imagine having cars go by at 50-70 mph.

Early morning time trialling on Singapore’s arterial roads...they are good for this sort of thing. However, Old Mate appears to have focused a little too much on potential vehicle traffic coming up from behind after the lane change....thud.... and then his front wheel came off or the fork broke. The camera bicycle/motorcycle did well to avoid him.

When I was riding in Austin, I generally picked roads with bike lanes and/or large shoulders, but some of them were ~50mph speed limit roads, which mean I’d always feel like there was a real chance I’d have some drunk going 60+ hit me, especially as I normally rode at night.

There have been too many bike/car deaths here lately for me to ride at night. Most have been people biking to or from work at wee hours.
