My old Jeep was picked for the FP story about seeing a car after you sold it. TL/DR: I bought a very tired ‘93 Cherokee on Maui, drove it like I stole it, sold it when I left, then saw it when I went back to the island two years later. What are the odds?
No reporters, please. I’d like to stay under the radar with all the money that should be pouring in any minute.

FP screwed me over and grayed me for no reason at all. Now I’m living at Oppo

I’m amazed the 2.5L was still going. If it was a 4.0L, I would imagine it’s still being driven today.

Yeah. My full attention wasn’t on Oppo in recent times so everything I posted was pretty half-assed. I changed my name to reflect change and also to reflect my new wants and stuff.

I cannot figure out when and why I get in the grays on Jalopnik and associated sites. At first I thought it was for swearing (as one fucking does) but that wasn’t it. I think it is just phase of the moon and the whims of the Kinja gods.

There’s no money for checks, now that Doug is the world’s only profitable automobile journalist.

The frame/body/etc was more or less intact; it’s such a perfect vehicle there, and importing a vehicle is rather cost prohibitive for that price range, so unless something really catastrophic happened to it, I suspect it’s still going. It wouldn’t surprise me if someone replaced the engine - again, you’d never do that on the mainland, but it’s different there.
Another trip there, we finally figured out the place to rent from - basically a jeep junkyard that slaps parts together and rents out wranglers for really, really cheap prices. I think the one we had was on 4 different wheels, the soft top didn’t really work right, and the doors locked but our key didn’t fit them. But it ran fine, and we didn’t have the Hertz I’m A Tourist package. People don’t really mess with old beat up jeeps there.

I’ll bring it back from Maui once they send me over there. I miss island life.
A few words of advice for those that have never been to the Hawaiian islands, never rent Mustang convertibles, Jeep Wranglers, or whatever convertible Chrysler is slinging.

haha exactly why the Jeep Junkyard is the place to go! I also have a friend on Maui who has 3-4 cars kicking around at any time. Typically old BMWs; he had a ‘85 535is when I lived there, man I loved that car. I borrowed an E30 from him the first time I went back, which was cool until it ate a fuel pump. Parts were a little slow to come out there, so I had to rent a car for a few days.

Planning on camping for a few weeks on Kauai this summer. Think I’m going to find a beater to buy and drive out to my spot and either sell it or give it away when it’s time to had back.
