Introducing my Shitsubishi, a 2017 fully loaded Mirage. 40s in the MPG range, priced very well, and warranty coverage until 2024 or 125,000 miles. Features are decent for a $13,000 car. Apple CarPlay, backup camera, and full power windows and locks are decent equipment for a cheap shit car.
In reality, I really like the little turd. Full review coming. But here she is!
Don’t mind the TPMS light. That’ll be getting fixed haha

For a second I thought you meant You paid 13,000 for it, with 125,000 miles.

Should be sweet! The Android Auto and Carplay are both pretty nice features to have.

Here’s what I think is funny about this car: it’s basically exactly what commenters on the FP always want (small, light weight, basic car without all the extra shig). But, they give this car crap.

That seems like a hell of a deal given how the warranty is going to work out for you.
Where in Ohio are you? I never seem to see much at the Ohio Carmax near me.

I think the problem lies within the powerplant itself. They are miserably slow, though I think Mitsubishi decided they wanted to go full miser with this one.

I kind of wish I was in the market for a little crappy commuter. I imagine you could have a lot of fun in one of these or a Micra or another subcompact

Boo...auto! I do love me some cheap cars. As terrible as they are, I like the little Mirage. Would’ve been easier to control all that I3 power with a stick though! :P

They’re not the most enjoyable cars though. Certainly great for the money if you just need a commuter, but something like the EG Civic hatch had the “small, lightweight, basic car without extra crap” AND it was a blast to drive offering a genuinely great enthusiast car stock, with fantastic modding potential.
FP commenters (and a lot of us) want a modern version of that, but it’s probably not going to happen. The Mirage is close in a lot of ways... But missing out on some of the most important ones

Unfortunately not. Just in the base. The CVT is the only transmission available on higher trim level cars. The CVT is actually fairly decent on the Mitsubishi I’m happy to report.

I agree to a point. When I drove one, though, the manual was so weird. The shifter leaned forward and down, and was so vague. I didn’t drive one with the CVT, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I liked that better.
I was hoping for a car like my old Chevy Sprints, but it just didn’t have the same cheerfulness to go with the cheapness.

I actually think the current base Jetta with the 1.4T is that car today. It can be had for $16k and yeah the interior is pretty chintzy in base trim but it has good bones, a good seating position, good visibility, the manual transmission is fun despite really needing another gear, and the motor is fun to wring out even if it doesn’t really accomplish much actual speed. The problem is VW bungled the current generation so much that people haven’t paid attention to how much better is after a facelift and new engine.

CVT’s have come quite a ways in the past few years and most are pretty tolerable. I have no real complaints about most I’ve driven. Except for Nissans. Which is amazing because Nissan was one of the first to start doing the CVT thing yet here we are 15 years later and they still stink.

Just looked on the Mitsu Canada site - we have 4 trims here: ES 5MT, ES CVT, ES Plus, and GT. The ES 5MT trim is base and the title speaks for itself, as does the ES CVT Trim. The ES Plus trim has a manual as an option though. GT seems to be CVT only as far as I can tell!

Avis has pretty with the auto :D I test drove a manual at a dealer. Then they started 4 squaring shit and I was like I’m just looking at a cheap car I’m not dealing with this shit.

I wonder what would happen if Mitsubishi gave the Mirage a bit more power for its size? Even if it’s a disposable trashcan of nonexistent quality, at least giving it a bit more bang under the hood would probably help it.

Maybe it’s not...the CVT might be OK if they did a good job with it. I just remember from experience, autos seem to sap power from smaller engines and I’ve always found manuals more useful when dealing with lower horsepower/torque motors (and not just saying that because #savethemanuals / I personally prefer them!). :)
A friend of the family has a Nissan Versa with a stick and I had to drive a same-year Versa with the CVT once as well....the CVT was SOOO much more gutless, despite the same engine...

Yeah, the CVT in the Versa is an abomination. It makes me wonder how a CVT would do in something with even less power like the Mirage.

Agreed, the boosted motor in this light car would be great. But then the price and such would be compromised. It’s always give and take.

https://www.atsg.us/atsg/blog/thejf011ejatcocvttothejf015ecvt7/ talks about both. (JF011E would be what the Versa you drove had AFAIK, JF015E being what the Mirage has.)
Actually, wait, that Versa could’ve been a JF015E, too.

The three Versas I had in my fleet with a CVT were awful. The 2012 Versa with a 4-speed auto was substantially better even with 212k+ miles.
