I just got back from a 400 km trip to pick something up in another city. I borrowed a relative’s 18 year old Ford F-150. It’s a beast, but man, is it thirsty! 48 L (~12.7 gallons) of gas to go 400 km (~250 miles). I spent more on gas today than I have in a long time!

Picture of said truck, taken a few years ago. It might be a thirst machine, but it sure has been helpful. That same relative lets us borrow it almost any time we need a truck, which has been super helpful. I think it’d take a long time for me to get used to backing that thing up, though. Visibility isn’t bad, but I’m not used to driving something so long. One of these days I should write up a proper Oppo-style review of it.

If I’m to be perfectly honest... 12 litres per hundred kilometres isn’t that bad. Hell, our Maxima got worse economy than that.

My 13 F150 with a V8 gets about 19. It’s not too bad

I get around 22-25 mpg highway on my 2015 Ram 1500 with a 5.7L

That’s actually pretty good. I get about that in my taco (commuting at about 85 mph).

My neighbor just came home with a brand new king cab F150 FX4, black with the larger sport wheels - it is super nice.

#1, that’s not bad at all.

#2, it’s about more than fuel costs. Where I am, a pickup instead of a car means at least a couple thousand in insurance savings for a younger driver. It more than offsets the extra fuel cost.

#3, We don’t need your envy. We’re happy :)

F150 7700 model. Basically a heavy half that was offered after the Super Duty came out.

In my car, I’m used to getting around 35 in a mix of city and highway. Best I have ever done is around 42.

You get used to the length. When I had my Roadmaster wagon, I always marveled at how easy it was to park in comparison.

My parents had a 1980 Buick wagon. Driving it on rare occasion was the bane of my teenage driving experience. Looking back at it, I really should have savoured those moments. My parents eventually sold it.

Precisely. My last tank on the Mazda5 was 19.3 MPG, a tad under the 21 MPG rating, and I thought I was doing pretty good, all things considered. I might do a little better if I had a longer commute, it wasn’t so damned cold right now and if this thing wasn’t so much fun to zip up to redline with each shift.

Depends. On my average driving which is mostly 50-55mph backroads and 60-70mph interstate driving over about 30 miles, I get about 20mpg. If I’m constantly doing 55-60mph, I can eke out about 23mpg. The moment the cold weather hits, I’m doing less than 20mpg as a given.

I think a part of the problem lies in the fact I only have a 4 speed transmission. Even one extra super-long gear for highway cruising would probably fix the fuel economy issues simply because of the fact that the engine could laze around 1600rpm instead of 2800rpm.

With the 5 speed auto, mine is at 2500rpm at 110km/h. Still, it usually does 7-7.5L/100km on the highway. I can’t remember what that is in US mpg.

It’s all about perspective. At my previous school district, I would regularly have to take kids to competitions in a 14 passenger minibus. After putting 500 or so miles on one of those over the course of a few days, getting back into my truck felt like driving a go kart.

Okay between the miles and 4 speed and higher suspension that makes some more sense. I have an 06 Legacy wagon with 50k kms on it
