I’d love to have this, but I’m currently trying to get OUT of the constant project car life. Not 6 ft deep under it.

Kinja'd!!!

I love these Saabs, the insanely giant liftback has to be the on of the most beautifully designed things in automotive history. Add a turbo, two tone paint and some three spoke wheels and it’s no wonder Saab’s were know as cars for architects. How could some one who designs building for a living not love such a graceful use of space.

Kinja'd!!!

And this one is the high performance SPG (special performance group) version.Which gave it the side skirts, a short throw shifter, and upgraded sport suspension. This on is for sale in a he middle of nowhere Wi for 1500 bucks. If I had like 5 grand laying around this would be mine.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Oh and here’s a picture of a full size air mattress in the back of a 2 door 900 SPG. How many spotty coupes can do that?

I saw that picture and immediately blurted out ‘SPG!’ I’ve always wanted one, but I’m not in a residential position that would allow me to have a project car. When I buy a new place I’m going to be in deep trouble, but as long as I have a two car garage and a basement I should be OK...

Rad car. I’ve never driven one but have always thought they were cool. Front wheel drive though? I thought these old Saabs were RWD?

Saab has never made a RWD car. Infact until the Saab 9-2x (saabaru) they had only had FWD cars. It was their thing.

Oh, with this you’d only be about 4 feet deep in it, as these aren’t 6 feet tall :)

Price seems OK if it isn’t rusty, SPGs aren’t common. Do it. It needs to be saved, even if it will be a never-ending project.

I already have one never ending project that I can’t afford.

Nope - always FWD which makes sense in Scandinavian countries.

The coolest thing about the pre-GM 900s and the 99 was that the engine was above the transmission. This meant that the clutch was on the front of the engine and is very accessible - no need to pull engine or transmission to change it.

Kinja'd!!!

The ‘80s Ferrari Testarossa also had the transmission under the engine which explains why it doesn’t suffer from the elongated proportions most mid-engined cars suffer from.

But where are all the other Saab’s? The only older Saab’s worth buying are the ones that have recently been completed and you can see the carcass of 2 to 5 other project/parts Saabs, at least in New England. Saab man/men around me always pick up totaled/junked Saabs along with one decent one on the cheap for parts and put a few together to sell, drive, or give the one good one they make to the new driver in the family. I know, I sold my 9-3 to one of said Saab men. The rest go to the scrapyard and since they weigh a fuckton, they usually get a couple hundred for the junked ones.

The first Saab man I met was a welder by trade and had a few 9000's, before he moved on to 900's. He also had a tow truck so that cut down on the cost of picking up parts cars. Most Saab men nowadays are working on 9-3's and early 9-5's. I doubt they’ll move on to later 9-5's or 9-2x’s...

Maybe they’ll start on the first gen BMW mini’s? A3 hatchbacks? I honestly can’t think of any other FWD quirky pseudo-luxury cars that they might be interested in.

Yeah same goes Fit Volvo. My when my brother lives in Maine he had the numbers of 3 “Volvo guys” he could call up and get anything he needed for a 740.

Kinja'd!!! Patrick Nichols > HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles

I think those “Volvo guys” might be dying off too (not in the literal sense, just that they don’t have a new old car to work on). Maybe the C30 will be the cheap used luxury project they desire after they depreciate a bit more, but from my experience the Ford-era volvos are going to be a lost cause and the newer ones will have too much electrical work to be worth the quick flips.

They didn’t come with a short throw. Source: I had an SPG

This car does give me feels. Eduardian Grey is the ONLY SPG color. Makes me miss my ‘87

Damnit I just picked up the Z28 don’t make me buy this too

Huh. Wikipedia claimed they did. Maybe it’s just shorter than a normal 900 but still pretty long.

Yeah a lot of those guys won’t touch anything newer than an 850, some distain any FWD Volvo.

Well, I guess you do have to change those a little more often. My last clutch went 231,000 miles before needing replacement, so I guess ease of changing that isn’t a big deal.

Kinja'd!!! Nibbles > HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles

Nope, same part numbers. The SPG came with a modified APC adding 10hp at max boost, body cladding, lower/stiffer suspension and the three-spoke wheels.

The spoiler on that SPG is unobtanium. They weren’t on any US-spec production models; only available in Europe on the Carlsson AirFlow or imported as bolt-on accessory

I spent years looking for a reasonable example that I could get paid for and shipped to the Us when I had my SPG. Never happened
