I gotta be honest, before reading Oppo’s front page I thought American drivers had their shit figured out and were actually good, responsible, prepared drivers. but apparently not....

When it snows, everyone goes “AHHHH” and forgets how to drive. This is my first year driving and I’m doing better (ie throttle control and being careful) than most of the drivers in Athens

I bet you think we actually test our drivers, too.

Here its the same but with rain, people don´t know how to drive in rain; they brake mid puddle and drive so slowly that someone might hit them from behind.

Same here, but with rain. since its sunny all the time they never change their thread and are amazed when they aquaplane right into a wreck!

Not a nerve, just that your particular assumption is waaaayyy off from what we experience from other drivers we encounter in our daily driving around town, to the point that it’s funny.

For example here in Wisconsin, you’d think with the amount of snow we get people would be buying snow tires in mass quantities and at least develop a basic understanding of how to drive in the snow. But only maybe about 10% of cars here run snow tires in the winter, and way too many people don’t know what they’re doing.

It snowed here (again) on Sunday night through to Monday afternoon. Sunday while it was snowing, I was driving the 3 miles home from the gym, and 2 different people almost ran into me because they lost sight of the lane markings.

One of them was in a left turn lane for a highway on-ramp, talking on their phone held up to their head, then when they realized realized, “oh, oops, I don’t want to get on the highway!” and merged right in front of me without signaling. A short while later, a different car on my right suddenly ended up straddling the middle of the road about to plow into the side of my car.

The next morning on my way to work, I spotted a police car with its lights flashing parked near the entrance to a roundabout. See where the black CR-V or whatever that is on the left is?

Kinja'd!!!

Someone in a Toyota Highlander had manged to slide up on the median in that spot, kinda like this, and the cop was alerting oncoming traffic to watch out.

Kinja'd!!!

And that’s just one little 4-5 inch snowfall when we average about 60 inches every year.

The same thing happens here in the PNW, where it rains all the time... I can give them a pass for the snow/ice problems since it doesn’t happen much in the valleys, but like 9 months out of the year you’re likely to have days on end of rain. How can you have trouble driving in it?!

I am really scared of aquaplaning because I almost crashed when my jeep lost traction in a highway corner.

Nowadays I normally run all seasons or wet weather tires, whenever the GS 800 runs out of thread we discussed getting rain tires on it too (since we really don’t use it at 10/10ths why not have it be safer when we catch rain?)

I can see your point, here in Mexico drivers suck too, specially here in the city, you expect people to be accustomed to having quite wet summers yet they seem to forget what happens in the rain!

And holy shit with that highlander!
