It snowed over night. There’s snow on the ground and ice on the roads. Normally on days like this I stay home because people are idiots and don’t know how to drive when the weather is good. But I still have to work. Some things I’ve noticed so far:

Upside down bro truck in a ditch.

Camry taking a curve at good condition speeds and nearly wiped out on a hard curb.

Many trucks and SUVs trying to floor it from a dead stop repeatedly until they try easing into the gas.

People basically not moving and failing to maintain momentum for hills.

Basically no one understands throttle control. No one understands why you can’t come to a complete stop before going up a hill. Everyone is either too aggressive or too cautious

Lawl at the upside down ‘MAH TRUCK IS LIFTED AND THEREFORE INDESTRUCTABLE AND INVINCIBLE OFF ROAD IN POOR WEATHER’ Bro truck.

I saw some of the same behavior from a Bro in an F-150, but the people along my commute managed to keep it upright and out of the ditch. A lack of throttle control was a problem for a couple of my coworkers, though I didn’t get to witness either of them driving in this morning. They just ran their mouths about how their tires were spinning everywhere they went.

Michigan has a similar issue with trucks. People think that “I have 4WD or AWD so this weather doesn’t apply to me!” I once had a truck blast by me in traffic, in the snow, and crash into a bridge abutment. I didn’t bother to stop, you made your choice.

I just got passed mid icy curve in a no passing zone (30 mph speed limit to boot) by an ass in a lifted Jeep.

This was one of my first lessons in winter driving. My mom was driving our little B-2000 when a lifted Bronco passed us. I said, “s ee, mom! That’s what we need to get for driving in the snow!” She replied, “four-wheel drives help a car go, but they stop the same as the rest of us.” That’s when the stop light turned red, the Bronco hit the brakes, slid through the red light into the median and hit a pole. Mom had eased off the gas and the light was green again before we got to the intersection.

Lesson learned. Thanks, mom.

Yesterday I got stuck behind a newish Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 going 20 mph in a 45 mph zone. I was ready to scream.

Yeah I was taught to drive in snow like there is an egg between your foot and the pedal. That’s a bit extreme most days but it has served me well

One day, when I have too much money, I’m going to get a set of studded winter tires just for days like this and then drive around on the ice like I stole it.

We get snow in Maine every year and every year this shit happens all over.

I think you nailed it exactly. It’s like some of these people with AWD/4WD vehicles have such an entitled mentality that they genuinely think that the weather doesn’t apply to them.

this right here is the reason we will have self driving cars, cause the average driver is a moron.

That’s crazy. I’m in SW Va and expect ignorance about traction & grip here, but I assumed a Maine resident would see enough growing up to know the basics.

I had that very thought today. I just had it again after coming down a clear road that turned to pure ice once I got to the downhill portion that was also on a curve

I have a running tally of just the Jeeps I see upside down every winter. GCs make up the bulk of this count but I saw a wrangler that was nose-down in the ditch, back tires in the air, and I reeeeeeally want to give it a half-count just due to how badly he must’ve screwed the pooch to do that.

About a decade ago, I was driving into work in a sleetstorm on a freeway that had small, but frequent, overpasses (Westpark Tollway for those in Houston). I was toodling along listening to the water under the tires, hit the first overpass, water noise went away. Okay, so I’m now on ice. Let of the gas and take it easy until I’m hearing water again.

About this time a bro-truck went screaming by me. He was about a 1/4 mile ahead when all of a sudden I see two headlight, then two taillights, then 1 headlight, and finally one taillight. He had hit the ice on the overpass and pingponged between the walls and wadded up his truck nicely.

And yup, he made his choice too. He was fine and I wasn’t going to lose my momentum helping a potential Darwin award winner.

No one in this world, so far as I know — and I have searched the records for years, and employed agents to help me — has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby.
