Canada, you lot are good to go! Pre-orders start this Thursday and I think deliveries will start in March. Australia, the Genesis “brand” will launch with the G70 and G80 at the end of April. USA, you have been placed on hold...
But it’s an orchestrated hold, a fermata, an intentional holding back purely for the drama.
Post Summary
The G70 sedan will probably be sold through Hyundai dealerships despite the drama over Genesis USA wanting 85-90 standalone stores
exclusively
selling and servicing their cars and interacting with their guests.
Speculation of Genesis product launches for the US.
Genesis Canada is doing it right.
Genesis Australia will do the same thing Genesis USA is doing.
Babbling to myself like my mute Uncle Mike, got dropped from the will for hitting these bars...psych!*
*(because it’s mental) Ohhhhh!!!
For those of you not keeping up with this soap opera, Genesis USA has decided that it only wants 85-90 dealerships selling and servicing their vehicles. Currently, there are around 350 Hyundai dealerships that can sell the $41k-$60k G80 sedan but are suddenly not permitted to sell a cheaper, entry level sedan.
If you thought Cadillac’s “Project Pinnacle” had problems then you should look into this mess.
What is going to happen, Im calling it now, is that Genesis USA will make a compromise — one they were planning to make ever since they started the drama — that allows Hyundai dealers to sell the G70 sedan but cut them off from every product change after the G90 refresh which will likely be unveiled this December of 2018.
I’m speculating that the product game plan for Genesis USA will be something like this:
Genesis G90 - Launch (2016)
Genesis G80 - Refresh + Sport (2017)
Genesis G70 - Launch (Nov 2018)
Genesis G90 - MAJOR Refresh (Early 2019)*
*This will be the point where Genesis USA cuts their remaining Hyundai-branded ties and makes the cars exclusive to their own sales system.
Genesis GV80 SUV - Launch (Early 2019)
Genesis G80 - New Generation (Late 2019)
Genesis GV70 - Launch (Summer 2020)
Genesis G70 - Facelift (Fall 2020)
Genesis GT90 - Launch (2021)
2016 Genesis Vision G Concept
In Canada, Hyundai dealers weren’t given the option of selling the rebranded sedans. There is a goal of 30 standalone dealerships eventually operating throughout Canada, but for now the cars are direct order (Genesis Motors Canada owns the inventory). There are some small boutique style locations in major shopping areas but the focus is the experience.
Checkout what these cars are delivered in:
Last I checked, your $450,000 Fezza, Macca, Lambo, Royce, or Ford GT won’t get branded glassbox, fancy fishbowl, autoterrarium delivery to your home. But a $55,000 Korean sedan is now bound to draw a crowd. Obviously, Canada gets the “luxury” branding and how to make the best of low initial volumes.
Australia, you guys will probably mirror the US rather than Canada. Hyundai dealerships will sell and service the G80 and G70 but once the next generation G80 arrives, everything introduced after that is a Genesis exclusive model.
Basically, if you see this front end design...
Genesis GV80 sketch
...then you can’t buy it, get your warranty work done, or expect concierge services from any Hyundai dealerships.
In the end, all these cars that are great new values and spec-freaking-tacular used car values will give you zero, absolutely zero, sub-zero (that’s colder than absolutely zero but warmer than absolute zero) luxury perks. That’s because, no matter what anyone tells you, these particular cars were, are, and will forever be just Hyundais.
Very very nice Hyundais.
I dont know these people! That aside, British and Korean cars go extremely well together. Perfect compliments and counterpoints to one another.

It’s hit or miss when it comes to lights in the ducts on any of these cars. They prove that even though the ducts are “functional” they aren’t essential in the slightest bit. I’m pointing at the Optima in particular.

No tricks here, tricks are for kids. It’s said that a headache in the morning is the sign of an active mind at night. Mmph, depth!
Did you ever do a write up on the Abarth? Maybe I just need an update... I need an update.

It’s crazy to think that the Sega Genesis came around the same time as Lexus and that’s still a decade before Kia went bankrupt and was purchased by Hyundai...and another decade before they made their own Genesis. There is a 20 year gap between Sega Genesis and Hyundai Genesis. I feel soooo old!!!

Am I insane for having debated purchasing one of these strange hybrids of European design language meshed with Korean construction?

In Oz, some thirty odd Hyundai dealers will have Genesis showrooms attached to sell the 70 and the 80. However, with more models coming by 2020, it looks like there may have to be more dedicated Genesis sites so expect a mix of both. As for Genesis warranty and servicing, any Hyundai service centre will be able to deal with that.

So wait, why is the US G70 delayed?

You go to your nearest Hyundai dealer and sit in the G80 they have on site. You ask the salesman about the cheaper G70 and get the reply, “We aren’t authorized to sell that.” However, the dealership 20 minutes away does sell the G70. Are you going to keep checking out your nearest Hyundai dealer or are you going to drive a bit further to the dealership that Genesis USA has pretty much certified as the “good” dealership?
Currently, 260 out of 350 Hyundai dealerships in the US could end up on the bad side of that situation. That is what Genesis USA needs to address before they can sell the G70.

I don’t see how this is relevant. The Genesis service experience is completely separate from Hyundai, even when inside of the same Hyundai dealer, so it’s irrelevant. This isn’t a Kia Stinger situation where you go buy a $50k car and then sit next to the Rio owner and get a Forte for a loaner. You get Genesis loaners, you get dedicated service separate from Hyundai, you get dedicated sales guys.

I saw the pre-sale media car (first one in NZ) at Hyundai Head Office last week, in that dark red color. I like it. They probably won’t be on sale here for a few months yet though.
