Fiancee + completely inappropriate tires + light car + ice = lol. Car’s fine, everyone’s fine, got it yanked out.
RE71R snow rating is not great. Can’t find any tires whatsoever in town that will fit my wheels, or used wheels that will fit my car. So that’s fun. Might drive 2 hours to buy some Mini cooper wheels with snow tires on them but I’m not sure if they’ll fit over my brakes :/
The jaaaaaaaag is fantastic in the snow. Stopped for donuts on the way to work. Good times.

Is there a reason why she’s driving the car with summers in the snow?
I feel like you know that the car isn’t it’s safest and you sent your gf out there
Shouldn’t you be the one risking it with summers in the snow?
HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles

I just got done test driving a Veloster Turbo R-spec and was reminded just how important tires are. It had the factory R-spec tires and they were JUNK in the snow. I couldn’t accelerate at all, and the back end kicked out turning left at an intersection. I got back in the Fit and drove home feeling safe with my snow tires.

Glad it’s fine and you’re okay! It happens to everyone, I got beached and needed a pull last week when I was out for a blizzard hoonage session. I tried turning around in what looked like a 100% tarmac cul-de-sac that had a sneaky unplowed green space in the middle (no curb). That trashed my fender liner and ripped off another piece of plastic under the car. Just a flesh wound!
You’re a legend for driving the Jag in the snow (one of my bucket list cars).

nothing local, then Tire Rack is the bomb-diggity.
As a younger guy, I had Azenis on my ‘00 Miata and tried to drive to work after a snowfall. At 45mph in 5th on a slushy highway, any amount of throttle caused them to spin. I ended up turning around and going home.
My current ND on Pirelli Snowcontrol 3s had 0 issue this morning. I bought the car at the end of December, and in the cold (30s) the summers were having issues. No way I’d try to do snow on summer tires again.

As far as ways this could’ve gone, you got damn lucky. Sending her out in that car on those tires when you’ve got access to a FWD Buick that’s not on used AutoX tires is downright irresponsible. I can’t tell whether she crossed the center line and went off or did a 180, but either way this could’ve ended so much worse. It would’ve been dumb if you’d been the one in the Miata, but it’s frustrating as hell that you put somebody else in that situation.

I mean the choice was NB Miata on summer tires with airbags, ABS, an comprehensive insurance, or V8 40 year old Jaguar on 5 year old all seasons with no abs, power steering, or real safety measures whatsoever.
The third option would have been to creep 10 miles south to my dad’s house in the Miata to pick up the Buick but that didn’t occur to us.

The Buick didn’t even occur to us. I didn’t know about the snow until my mom texted me at 10 last night to warn me about it. So unless we got the Buick last night we would have had to tip-toe the Miata 10 miles south and back to get the thing before work, which didn’t occur to either of us.

Cheapest thing on Tire rack is gonna be $400 for a set of all-seasons, before installation.

For sure. I had no idea how bad the roads were until we had both left.

Yeah. RE71Rs in the snow is dumb. I didn’t realize how nasty things were until we both left for work.

All o can tell you is that the third option Should have been the only option, I get it but obviously summers aren’t meant to go below like 40° F so you driving them in the snow was obviously risky to begin with.

Same issue here, still rocking all seasons from the previous owner. I bet I wouldn’t have been stuck on snows.

This happened to us one time, in a RWD Xterra towing a nearly-empty UHaul trailer. Ended up jack-knifing it once on a small highway, got it going again, had to decided whether to spend a day or two at a gas station in blizzard conditions or forge on to the interstate. The next six hours were the some of the scariest of my life... We made it, with my nerves completely burnt, and my shoulders sore from being tense the entire time...

RE71R snow rating is not great.
I would argue RE-71R snow rating is just plain “NOT”. They must be terrifying in the snow.
Can’t find any tires whatsoever in town that will fit my wheels, or used
wheels that will fit my car. So that’s fun. Might drive 2 hours to buy
some Mini cooper wheels with snow tires on them but I’m not sure if

Pretty much any 15" wheels should fit over the “sport” brakes. I’m using Koing Dial-In 15x7 that I bought as part of a winter package from Discount Tire Direct a few years ago. With real winter tires, the Miata is excellent.

Honestly not awful in the snow. Ice is another matter entirely.

That does make sense. Ice is always another level of challenge, even with winter tires.
