So we had the pistons and rings replaced on my wife’s Matrix from Toyota’s oil consumption recall. She drove the car back from the dealership Monday night and was only driven on a short trip once during the week. Last night we leave to go to a friends house and I notice the oil light start flickering as we leave our subdivision so I turn around go home and check the oil. There’s absolutely nothing in there. I add oil and run the engine but the oil light is actually on now. The car was driven like 30 miles with no oil but for some reason the oil light didn’t come on until last night. The dealership is sending a tow truck to pick up the car and will be checking it out. So oppo, how much damage should I expect from 30 miles of driving? What should I deem acceptable action from the dealership? And why the hell didn’t the oil light come on when there was no oil? And why is it on now that there is oil?

Edit: so the dealer came back and said there is plenty of oil, too much in fact. I asked why the dipstick was still showing nothing and apparently sometime after an engine rebuild the oil doesn’t stick the to dipstick so it looks like there’s nothing? I’ve never heard that before, but okay. The oil light was still coming on though so they were going to keep it until Monday and take a look at that.

LFA for your time

I’m not sure, I think it would depend on the damage. Maybe a new engine depending on damage. Also, I have a 2005 Corolla with the 1.8 but haven’t heard of this recall yet.

How many quarts of oil did you have to add to reach the dipstick?

So oppo, how much damage should I expect from 30 miles of driving?

Entire engine could be fucked. Cylinder walls, bearing surfaces, crank journals, etc. It really depends on how long it was oil starved.

What should I deem acceptable action from the dealership?

Probably a teardown and rebuild at minimum, but you might get lucky. I’d contact Toyota corporate anyway. I’d be fair but brutally firm. Honestly it may be cheaper for them to just put a new engine in, not sure though. Under NO circumstances would I accept an ‘oil fill and apology’.

And why the hell didn’t the oil light come on when there was no oil?

Might have been some in there and it all burned/leaked out.

And why is it on now that there is oil?

Maybe you didn’t add enough oil. Or there is a serious leak.

Ours has the 2.4, it’s a tested recall they do an oil consumption test. You have to be burning a quart every thousand miles or so to get the recall work done

They most likely didn’t size the piston rings correctly and you burnt oil all the way home. As long as you didn’t drive too much after the light came on you should be ok. They are definitely going to have to do the rings again.

It’s extremely unlikely you drove for thirty miles without oil.

Yes that’s kind of what I was thinking, even if nothing seems damaged now who knows what happens 10000 miles from now

It’s a stretch, but entirely possible that insufficnet oil was added by the dealer after the rebuild. Hard to imagine that it dumped 4 quarts in 30 miles or so.

Even if that was the case, you’d never be able to prove it since adding oil.

Yeah, that’s why I’m kind of assuming the worst. It really depends on what it looks like when it’s opened up but they made a pretty big mistake that can give you problems down the road.

Hmmm... wouldn’t burning that much oil be obvious from the exhaust?

Depending on how fast you were driving it would be about as obvious as the sounds a dry engine would be makin after about ten minutes.

If it truly was basically empty there is no way it’d go 30 miles without issue, the temp and check engine light would have kicked on quickly and the valve tick would have been very apparent. The new rings are going to take a bit to set and you will use a bit of oil during that process. The dipstick reading is odd.. there really shouldn’t be any reason why it would change. But if you were blowing oil past the rings that quickly you would see it and smell it in the exhaust. My best theory is that there was oil in the motor, maybe just a bit short, the new dipstick makes it harder to read or something, the shop is accurate about there being too much oil in after the extra was added. But that still doesn’t explain the oil light still coming on now... oil pump issues maybe? Weird...

Oil sometimes doesn’t shop up in the dipstick after a rebuild?

What a bullshit answer! I might accept “sometimes after a rebuild, or even an oil change, the oil will be so clean it’s really difficult to see on the dipstick”. But if you added 4 quarts and were then able to see it, that kills that theory.

Sometimes during engine work oil level sensors get gummed up and stick. Is it an oil level light/sensor? Or is it for pressure? This is an important distinction.

It could drive 30 miles without oil and that’s what most likely happened. Oil not sticking to the dipstick is a lie. Dealer or Toyota is going to have to replace the engine and provide a rental. Hopefully they don’t make you fight for it

Early 1ZZ’s actually do have a reputation for oil consumption, but there is no recall for yours or mine. MasterMario probably has the 2nd gen Matrix which is the 2.4

My 1ZZ doesn’t consume much oil at 148,000 miles which is nice. I don’t have to top it off between oil changes
