Selling out the people that want to come here to attempt to patronize the ones that don’t. Good game.

The thing that boggles my mind is....that’s the point of immigration! To go from a country that you don’t like to one that you do! People rarely organize a mass exodus from one country to another when things are fine and dandy. So Trump basically wants people to stop looking UP to the USA as a place to achieve your dreams. At the same time, he wants the best of the best from white, European nations to come in and....live a slightly different lifestyle? Have to pay more for health care? Enjoy some open space? I mean, we still have reasons for others to move here but it’s not like 100k Norwegians will suddenly go “HOLY CRAP GUYS, WE NEED TO GET TO AMERICA RIGHT NOW!!!! LAST ONE THERE SMELLS LIKE LUTEFISK!!!”

This guy and his fans are hilarious.
I’m not even offended by his actual comment, but look, is that a Trump Tower in Panama? Manila? Pune? Just going off a list on Wikipedia. All would rank quite high on his supposed “sh*thole” list.
If these countries are so terrible, why are you putting your name on buildings there that do nothing to help the local economies?

Only the worst president and leader of the worst regime in American history. Nothing special.
The Norway part makes it a billion times better. The dotard is obviously unaware of the rest of the world, which might be related to narcissism.

Upon further review, IDGAF that Trump referred to the countries in question as shitholes. As with most things, he’s mostly right. He just met w/ the PM of Norway, so that’s probably why he referred to Norway, since it was fresh on his mind. That also follows through with the entire message he’s been sending - His goal is to improve America, and wants “high quality” immigrants as part of that.
I do have a problem with him backtracking. If he said it, own up to it.
Watching various news outlets say shithole 20 times per broadcast is hilarious though - It’s their Word Of The Day. This is even better than “covfefe”.

Not really upset that he said shit hole countries. Lots of countries are literal shit holes, but my issue is that he says they need more reason to be here than a person from a well off white country.

Well, at the very least, Trump saying he’s pro-Norway-type countries and anti-“shithole” places like Africa, Haiti, etc. (a friend had the wonderful comment that there’s a 0% chance Trump knows Haiti is not a country in Africa) makes it plain as day he’s a racist fuck. He might as well have said: ‘Whites? The paler the better—sure, come on in! Brown people? Fuck no, get rid of the ones we already have! There’s nothing but crime and poors in Africa.’

I think that if people want to immigrate to America (and we seem so convinced that ours is “the greatest country ever made,” so if you believe that, why the fuck wouldn’t people want to?), the place from which a person comes shouldn’t factor in. Does the American dream have exclusions for those coming from countries torn by war, poverty, etc.? No, it doesn’t. The ideal is that if you come here, follow the law (which in many cases seems stacked against certain ethnicities, but that’s another point...), and work hard, anyone has opportunity to pursue the American dream.
I think Trump singling out Norway versus Haiti/Africa speaks pretty clearly to his preferred demographics.

GWB was probably damaging in terms of his domestic policy. Patriot Act, corn subsidies what dovetailed beautifully with the green washing of the American auto industry, and his administration pushed the legislation through for the housing market, and deepwater horizon. Granted, Dubya had eight years to wreak havoc, and the oompa loomp isn’t even through year one, but he’s also quite possibly going to lose the Senate, which will make further domestic policy damage more difficult.

His version of “Making America great again” is merely him being in power. To do.....golf....and things. I can see where you’re coming from and the idea behind it, and it actually COULD work, but he isn’t the one who can pull it off at this point.
Remember - his whole campaign was that America is awful. And he’s going to make it great by pissing off everyone outside of groups of people that the rest of the world would rather not have. And he also went into his term with the idea of being “America first” when it comes to policy. Credit where credit is due, that is a legit form of governance. You can, as a world leader, make a statement to other countries and say “I am focusing on my people in a very selfish manner because I believe that is what is best for my people at this time”. That’d be consistent with a person whose slogan was to make their country great again. But once this administration got up and running? The decisions and statements he has made in this manner have peen perceived by the rest of the world as ignorant, insulting, and something they vehemently disagree with if that was their own country.
So if that’s the sort of immigrant he wants, he needs to be...well...More like Obama. Let’s leave it at that.

Intelligent, educated, modern society types used to indoor plumbing that won’t be a drain on the country? Yes, I can see how he’d prefer that demographic to the opposite.

The plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty reads: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore,” she wrote. “Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Also, nice assumption that those from poor/non-first-world nations can be assumed to be not only a drain on our country, but stupid, uneducated, and backwards, as well. What about those immigrants who find themselves fortunate to be accepted here, work their asses off to go to school, get degrees, and rise to be positive, major contributors to our society? Are we going to say if people don’t meet your pre-emptive requirements, fuck ‘em? I say no.
That’s why education is such a wonderful thing: people can learn , in much the same way that I hope you can learn to adjust this viewpoint you’ve espoused above.

That’s why education is such a wonderful thing: people can learn ,
But in general, they don’t. That’s why when trump decides to not renew the temporary protected status for something that happened 20 years ago, you have those people who still don’t know English and haven’t taken any steps to make their residency permanent. You might get one out of 20 (probably generous) that comes here and thrives, 17 others come and try and mold society to the one they left, and the remaining 2 are plain criminals. I’ve seen firsthand how previously nice areas turned into crime-ridden shitholes (and that’s been my descriptor of the place for almost 20 years).

Your single anecdote/experience and negative estimations do not carry the same weight as facts. Get some empirical data to back up your claims, and I might be more inclined to consider what you’re saying. The thing is, though—these kinds of studies shoot some serious holes in the picture you’re painting:
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/26/us/trump-illegal-immigrants-crime.html
And that’s just a few to refute your estimation that 10% of immigrants are criminals. Look at the “Now This” video I shared again; those individuals are educated, productive, well-spoken members of society. I’m willing to wager that the vast majority of people have that capacity, and simply want to make a living for themselves and their families. When you consider how subsequent generations have an easier time integrating into a given population (from a language, cultural, and other perspectives), why are you so quick to write off entire swaths of people? The United States was founded by immigrants. The phrase “melting pot” springs to mind—are you going to say that any number of groups in our history should be looked down upon or turned away? If you’re arguing for a merit-based system (which is the height of hypocrisy when Trump brings it up), what are your criteria, then? Religious, economic, education level, how do you want to determine who’s “good enough” to come here?To me, it presupposes that a person can’t improve their standing in regards like education or wealth, that the cultural or religious differences from those around them cannot be understood and embraced.

You said 2 out of 20 immigrants are criminals, they “try to mold society into the one they left” (what the eff is this, a “they’ll bring Sharia law” dog-whistle?) and cause previously nice areas to devolve into crime-ridden shitholes. The studies in those links (and many others, I’m sure) paint a very different picture regarding large numbers of immigrants. I’m really not sure how I can be more clear about my stance. You amaze me with your flat denial of their relevance to what we’re talking about.

come on, 2 out of 20 was just a pulled-out-of-my-ass number, I guess I wasn’t specific enough for you. As for molding society to the one they left? You really don’t know what that means? It literally means trying to shape the society they’re moving into (whether actively or passively by refusing to integrate) into the one they left, whatever that may have been. If you want it to mean sharia law, I suppose it can, I had a different culture in mind, the one that turned the town into a crime-ridden, gang filled shithole.

Two in twenty is already a pretty specific number, and I think it’s wrong to use that estimation to negatively assume that groups of immigrants should be written off/turned away/whatever based on their nation of origin or the state of that nation when they wish to come here (I’m assuming to carve out a better or different life). I know what you mean when you posit that a large percentage will try to mold society into the one they left—I just think it’s laughable. Do large populations of native-Japanese people in a given area in the U.S. try to hold others to their cultural standards of over-working themselves to exhaustion? Have they somehow changed laws to reflect those of their original nation? As another example, Muslims from the Middle East may be adamant about praying at certain times of the day and such, but that’s a decision they make that is protected by freedom of religion, and it no way adversely affects others who don’t share their beliefs. Now, they may operate a certain way around others who share their heritage (out of comfort or some other reason), but it’s a far cry from molding our society into theirs.
