Tonight featured a group of my good friends getting together for second Christmas. The theme of second Christmas is generally being selfish together, where everyone brings a thing and/or drink they want to enjoy, and then proceed to enjoy it themselves in the company of good friends.

I brought a bottle of Ardbeg, which is a new scotch for me. Overall, I’m a very happy camper. It is the strong peat start you expect from an Islay, but a smooth finish that is lighter on the smoke than I expected. It won’t be replacing Laphroaig 10 as my favorite Scotch, but it is a fine addition to the pantry.

Bonus content:

I think the reason I like my Whisky tasting like biting into a burning chunk of peat has to with the trip my family took to Ireland when I was 13. Part of the trip was spent in a cottage in the village of Oughterard. These thatch roof cottages were primarily heated by burning peat, and it was a wonderful experience. Beyond the inner pyromaniac in every thirteen-year old boy loving any fire, the smell of a steady peat fire was amazing. The whole time, place, weather, cottage and fire were just so right. Even at that age, I knew it was a special. It turns out that a peaty Scotch is the closest I’ve been able to come to recreating that aroma, taste and warmth inside. For me, the more smoke and peat the better in my Scotch, so I generally stick to the Islays.

Car content:

We rented three 1998ish Renault Menganes, two manuals and one with an automated manual. They were garbage.

If you do enjoy some delicious peat flavor I have a few recommendations to look for when you’re out that isn’t Lagavulin. My favorite distillery Bruichladdich and anything from it. There are more if you are interested.

I had a bottle of Bruichladdich that lasted most of 2016 in the pantry and enjoyed it. I have no idea how to pronounce it.

I’ve heard good things about Bunnahabhain, but I tried the 12 and it fell a bit flat for me. Maybe the other ones would be better.

Friend was trying to get me to get an Octomore yesterday lol.

Ardbeg is a bit high on the iodine/band-aid scale for me, although I do have a do have a bottle of Smokehead, which people generally think is an Ardbeg product.

Try Caol Ila if you haven’t. I think you’ll have a similar impression. Still peaty, with a more subtle iodine touch and smooth finish.

Ahhh...the smell of a peat fire in the old country. My Mom has an (old) place in Kerry, and it’s heated by peat fire and a coal-burning stove. It’s one of the most distinct smells, and instantly transports me back to the coast on Dingle Bay. I always bring a small bit of peat back home with me, for those cold, damp fall/winter days when you just burn a little piece and pour yourself a drink.

If you’ve never tried it, find yourself some Connemara Peated Irish Whiskey. For some reason they use Scottish peat instead of Irish these days, but worth a try, especially the cask strength with a spot of water.

A few others I really like Loki by Highland park, for peat there is always Peat Monster, a more all around is Talisker Storm. Okay I’ll stop but if you ever need some randoms I got some!

Octomore is a favorite because of it’s sheer intensity. The who thing is intense.

But yes, it’s on my bucket list. Just not now with Valka complaining about the battery.
