I’ve been interested in the idea of a Porsche 944 with an LS swap for a few months now. I’m not really in a good position to take on a project car, so I have instead been hanging out with a guy who has (among other things) a 944 project car. This guy is a good bad influence, and early this week sent me a link to an ad for a 944 turbo, considered the best starting point for an LS swap 944.
The car is offered fairly cheaply, because it has body and mechanical problems to fix. I’m interested in tackling those, but the reality is that I just don’t have the time or a big driveway/garage, and I’d have a challenge convincing my wife that this is reasonable.
After agonizing and strategizing about it for the past couple of days, this morning I decided to pass on it. I even had another mechanically inclined friend who lived nearby the car ready to go look at it for me, but I just told him not to.
Part of it is that I bought my 2016 GTI to do almost everything I wanted, making an old 944 hard to justify. I don’t think I’d take the 944 autocrossing (unless I did a lot more to modify it), I wouldn’t commute in it, and I don’t really want to get into the time and expense of track days. I would just want to work on it, but, again, I don’t really have much time for that, and it would need a lot of time and money.
My new plan to distract me is that I’m going to consider a decent condition C5 Corvette, maybe in a year. I think I have a slight chance of convincing my wife on that one even though it would be more money up front because I’d want one in okay shape. I probably won’t actually do it and will just enjoy the GTI per my original plan 2 years ago.
I hope someday to retire and have time for project cars as well as time for family, friends and my dog, but at the moment project cars are not the priority.

Have you thought about karting? I think it’s the cheapest thrill per mile, and is kid friendly (depending on how young your kids are).
