And would it affect how you drive if you did? Particularly for those of us with older cars...Lets do it

Kinja'd!!!

Nasty. Not a targa like mine, but it doesn’t look like the stiffer roof helped much

Kinja'd!!!

Not *too* bad but I wouldn’t want to be in it

Kinja'd!!!

Same color as mine! Not nice.

Kinja'd!!!

Particularly nasty

Kinja'd!!!

Look at that crumple zone! It’s like 50% of the car, goes well into the cabin

Kinja'd!!!

Golly

So that’s what happens if I crash. How hard is it to crash?

All this guy did was dip a wheel off the tarmac under braking, easy to do. Of course, on real roads all it takes is hitting a bad patch on the road .

This guy, yes, he accelerates on a wet track before the car is straight. But he doesn’t accelerate much, and elsewhere in the video he demonstrates he’s able to feel and correct a slide. He seems on top of the situation until he’s not .

Easy to crash, not safe when you do. Be safe out there

If you want the definition of “accident” try finding a picture of a MR2 that came off a wet track in one piece.

I think that’s a different issue to me. The car holds up well, but how will your face hold up? No crumple zones to soften the blow, possibly no airbag? I mean if you get t-boned the car might come out fine, but you might hit your head on a pillar pretty hard.

NO ONE IS SAFE

One of the reasons I decided to re-evaluate my daily driver position. Get something decently quick but with exceptional safety and practicality.

http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/vehicle/v/infiniti/q50-4-door-sedan

The front crash prevention is a little finicky threading through traffic if I don’t turn it off, but it has actually corrected my somewhat aggressive braking. I brake a little earlier now, when/where I should have been braking in the first place.

Who knows, maybe the front crash prevention will save me and my car someday :)

I don’t want to think about what a wrecked 3rd gen Prelude would look like. Or worse, what its occupants would look like. My TSX, on the other hand, got good safety marks. Even in the small overlap test the main risk was broken feet/ankles.

Hopefully it does save you one day, that’d be a big win. I believe I’ve had ABS save me once or twice. Once I couldn’t see a line of cars had stopped until a bit too late and it was wet. ABS kicked in and I stopped in time, I’ll never know what would’ve happened without it.

I’m just working things in the opposite direction. It used to be that my “project” car was 25k+ and my daily was around 10k. But now I’m dailying something north of 30 and looking for a project south of 15.

I love the 90's. If I could convince my GF, I would be looking at a Z32, S14, or R32. I might be able to get away with an S30 or a 510, but she really wants me to get something more in the neighborhood of a Chevelle or Nova for my next project. LOL

I feel pretty confident that my car will protect me. BMW went all out as far as 90's safety tech is concerned. Among other things, the doors are designed not to pop open in a crash and there’s an explosive battery disconnect so it doesn’t short and start a fire.

For a car that is 25 years old, and was designed ~7 years before even the moderate overlap crash test was in the public’s awareness, it did pretty well. There are modern cars (2012 Camry, for example) that didn’t do much better. I would like to see what the conclusions were on the test though - I can’t seem to find them anywhere.

An yes, target is sometime next year, hopefully in the spring - provided circumstances don’t change or I don’t have a change of heart - both very doubtful.

Solid Rear Axle. The more commonly used term is “live axle”

Not a super well known acronym outside of drag racing communities. Used to have an 03 cobra and the people into drag racing would do an SRA swap to that gen cobra to mitigate wheelhop... or when the stock rear would grenade at the track.

People use it sometimes when they describe going from SRA to IRS as well sometimes.
