If you haven’t looked at CJ Pony/etc. recently, Dynacorn are offering a whole bunch of whole bodies now. Used to be just the ‘67 and maybe one other, but now they’ve got ‘65-’66 convertible and ‘67-’70 fastbacks.
I mean, on the one hand, $18 large, but on the other, it means you can find any rust heap disaster of a stang and build brand new...

That is amazing! I wonder how making a VIN for these works if you’re just doing a kit car or anything along those lines. I also wonder how the price of the body compares to finding a rusty one and cut and welding panels and such.

Well, the main paths are either to have a serial donor or to stamp the body and to go with a state dependent “replica” tagging process - which is different depending on where you are. I imagine it’s a question of completing it, stamping some type of ID that’s traceable to you, filing a build sheet/descriptive paperwork, and having a state inspection like for a rebuilt title/lost title/etc. Locost or Caterham kit guys would know more.
As to price, I think a really good donor would be >$10k, and possibly as much as $25k, so having a perfect body to combine with a $2.5k crapheap notchback and $5k in parts... it starts to make sense. A $10k donor would still very possibly require $5k in bodywork, and wouldn’t be as nice as a whole perfect body - particularly if you’re going for something choice like the fastbacks and convertibles, which of course is what Dynacorn sells.
