A while back, I reported that the house next door to mine had sold to a couple who had !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Last night they stopped by for drinks, and I learned the history of the car. It’s a 1984 Mercedes 240D, which they purchased new. The husband was in the air force, so the car is a European-spec, left hand drive but with cloth seats and Euro bumpers. It sat for nearly 20 years before they had it restored, and as such it has just 86,000 original miles. The license plate, “SENATOR”, was the husband’s call sign back when he was a navigator. They retold many interesting anecdotes about the car, but the bottom line is that they have loved it since new and are very proud of it. They also said that when I’m back from school for a bit longer I we can take it for a spin, which should be fun.

My father in law has a Euro spec 82 280CE. It’s a neat car, he loves plodding along in it. Cool that your neighbors bought that new and still have it. Cool car to hang on to for all these years.

Not sure how I found this, but interesting car. I think the last year for 240D as a NA-spec model was 1983, so this is best of both worlds - oddball grey market car but easy parts availability. I also noticed the car in the driveway has rear headrests, which were an uncommon option on a 240D. It must be their baby. A friend of mine has a nice one, a manual even, one of those cars the fintail can beat in a race :)
