On my way to take my first math test since high school.

Don’t feel too bad. I got a 45 on the last math test I’ve taken, the final for diff eq.

I’m pretty sure a 45 would have been an A+ in the diffy Q class I took...

I got a 70 in the class, it was a B.

It’s been 30 years for me, but I got a B in it somehow - probably with an average in the high 50s, low 60s?
Some of the grading curves the last two years of engineering school were breathtaking -

40 years ago, Diffy Q was the death of my Chem E aspirations. I could memorize it but I was never any good at it. I figured I shouldn’t major in something that I wasn’t very good at, so off to Industrial Engineering I went.
Turned out the result was a career in engineering product management. And actually am pretty good at that. Thank you diffy Q!

Haha!! Similar story - 30 years ago, I was studying ME in Champaign, IL, and Diffy Q (along with 1-2 other courses) got me to shift over to IE, too!
Fast forward 30 years, and I’ve been in financial planning & analysis for quite a long time- it’s worked out well for me, too!

Yep, There I was in 1977 at Iowa State in differential equations class with
- the teacher’s assistant saying “this is intuitively obvious”
- the guys who didn’t have to study sitting in the front row correcting him
- with me sitting in the back row going “say wut?”
I always said the Dean of Engineering only handed me my diploma after I promised to never design anything or manage other engineers.
That was a good deal for all.

This is only college algebra, and it’s not weighted :(
Although that probably wouldn’t help me, since all the kids straight outta HS are like “lol 2 ez”

Ha! U of I ME 96 (ok 96.5) here. 100 on my DifEQ final. My roommate and close friend got the second best grade...83. I’m surprised I don’t still have the bruise, that little fucker could punch.
Linear Algebra... that was brutal. 55% and I got a high B.
Based on the above evidence, I should have tanked higher math and gone on to business success! (Nahh, I like engineering management.)

The good old “by observation, the answer is....”. I interpreted that as “then a math miracle happens...”

There is not one damn thing “intuitively obvious” about differential equations.
That boy ain’t right.

Nice! 89.5 for me. Engineering was really weird for me. Every class was either a cakewalk or impossible for me - not much in between.
I graduated in IE, and gradually morphed from technical services (metallurgy of all things) to marketing to finance. After I got my MBA, the technical stuff was long gone.

Who am I to say as the guy who sat in the back row.......

Imaginary Engineer here too. I can write, can do business cases, and can motivate engineers to do things that they thought were too hard, they thought nobody would like and they thought nobody would ever pay for. I’ve been a bad influence since 1980....

Yep, back in the day that 10% got A’s, there were not to many participation trophies in E School.

Funny, I really liked linear algebra. Diffy Q though was my Waterloo...

Nope, there were not. A lot of people were engineers for a year or two, and liberal arts or business by their junior year.
