It’s 2017 you guys. If you didn’t make a video of whatever you just did for the whole world to marvel at (ridicule), did you even do the thing? 2017 says no, so I bought an action cam for the red soon-to-be-racecar Miata. This post, however, is about mounting it.
The camera in question is an Akaso EK7000, which has pretty positive reviews on Amazon, so I picked up the cheapest new one I could find...$45 shipped. I also bought this guy:
Thats a 3d printed action cam mount made to screw in in the place of your sun visor. If you know Miatas, you know that losing your sun visors is generally a positive thing and this should be the perfect place to mount the camera. And it is! Except that this particular one is flawed.
Turns out the hole for the bushing is just a little bit too big, so it wobbles. This is easily remedied with some glue, but that makes it not quite as versatile as I thought it would be...I was hoping to be able to turn the camera easily, but it’ll be basically fixed in place.
I think I need to add a ball joint elbow in the middle. That way I can fix both ends (camera and mount) securely and make my adjustments in the middle. They appear to be all over ebay for $10-20, so I think that’ll be the way to go.
All that said, I’m leaving tonight for Seattle, so I’ll do it when I get back next week.

Hmm, interesting idea for mounting. I have a roll bar now so I planned to just mount to that. I also still have the visors in my Miata but really they are quite pointless in there. The only time they can be of use is driving with the top up on a sunny day. But really when do I ever do that??
Currently I have a rearview mirror mount for one of my old Android phones. I have used this to run TrackAddict and record some videos of autocross runs. The only issue is that the mount is REALLY shakey and ends up making the videos come out a little crappy:
Not as bad as I expected but could just use a more solid mounting location. Roll bar mount should fix this, just havent gotten around to trying that out yet since my car has been in the shop.

I think once I get the wobble fixed, this should work okay...at least until I put a rollbar in the car, since I’d love to have it centered on the bar behind me. Right now the whole thing is angled, but if I get that ball joint mount I’ll be able to straighten it out.
That video is still pretty good. Definitely a Miata in its natural habitat.

You have any video samples of your current setup in action?

You can get some pretty neat shots from your current mounting location if you center the camera on you

Nah, the only reason I was off today and had time to set it up was because we’re getting the runoff from Hurricane Jose, so driving this car with its lack of top wasn’t in the cards. I’ll probably take it for a ride when I get back to RI next Friday.
