I love stuff like that. I was watching Blade Runner the other day, and lamenting the lost art of physical effects and matte painting.

There’s a bunch of stuff that the Wikipedia article is behind on - he did pieces for Alex Proyas’ Knowing , some pieces for Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Wars The Force Awakens, and so on. He’s pretty prolific. The funny thing is, while his product is *very* much in the classic style and matte painting tradition, he was one of the very first people to use Photoshop and work in layers with his pieces - which he says is now nearly a necessity to stay competitive simply because the process of creating a guidance piece goes through so many major and minor tweaks. Binning a whole painting and starting fresh just isn’t practical anymore.

One thing’s clear - if I were writing a sci-fi book, he’d be on my short list for covers, along with Vincent diFate if still available:

I can certainly appreciate the move to PS. But there’s something about physical effects done well that I still think is better than computers. Sure, you can do more with computers (or too much, Mr. Lucas), but I think it all boils down to lighting. You can’t top honest, real, true light.

Mr. Martiniere has a background in architecture, and does physical sketches before adding elements in Photoshop. He *can* do oils, but he’s not as good with them as the imaginary equivalent (he says) - and there’s still the same sort of impressionist lean and skill of the artist shining through with doing digital oils vs. building a set of 3d models for a render. Although sometimes a 3d model/skeleton is created, and then used as a framework for the “paint” in such a piece.

Regardless, the base of the work is a pencil/pen sketch for him, scanned in. He has tried using “brush-simulating” graphic design tools but finds that using a simple medium-sized Wacom tablet serves his needs better.

On the topic of light and shadow and the skills of artistry, one of the people at the Dragon Con Star Wars droid-builders panel shared a story. Apparently a pair of Canadian brothers who were artists contributed an R5 droid to a Star Wars droids gathering, and when it came time to pack things up, simply grabbed the droid and carried it away. It was made of cardboard, but so artfully painted that the speaker had failed to notice from a mere ten feet away...

He worked on the 5th Element too! That movie holds up extremely well thanks to the practical effects

It’s funny how one little painting can make or break an entire film, just due to informing set design, prop development, matte paintings, cultural design aesthetics - IMO the concept art is nearly as important as the screenplay.

I went to his panel at the convention on a whim, and I’m very glad I did.
