Basically, these are adventure bikes using a Smart ForTwo’s 800cc turbodiesel triple, through a CVT, hence the Mercedes-bait. (I’m not sure if they can come into the US, though.)

They’re doing it wrong. You are supposed to put the bike engine in the Smart.

This could be the solution to re-use the left over bikes without engines, and the smart engines though. (Not that such a solution is really needed)

To be fair, though, I’m pretty sure they started with the goal of, “we want to make a decent diesel adventure bike”, and looked for the most suitable engine.

The engines that usually get put into diesel motorcycle conversions are literal generator engines, and are often 10 hp single cylinders - maybe 16 or 19 if you got one of the Ruggerini twins (which, I’ve got a Ruggerini 654 cc twin lying around, that I bought specifically for a diesel three wheeler project that I’ll never get around to). A few of them are using Kubota tractor engines, there’s a couple enthusiast builds with the Smart engine, and someone did a sport bike using a VW aluminum block 1.2 TDI.

All this needs is a sidecar and 2-wheel-drive (or better). Then again, that’s probably because I consider a Ural about the peak of practical motorcycle technology.

I sometimes feel like I was born on the wrong side of the iron curtain.

As someone who’s spent a lot of time in communist countries and loves old Soviet stuff: trust me, you weren’t.
