The 10 & 2steering wheel knobbies, and the overly sensitive passenger seat scale that triggers the seatbelt warning. At first I thought it was for my seatbelt and it had malfunctioned as I was wearing it.

Most modern seat belt sensors are capacitive, rather than weight-sensing. My old one would chime if I put my phone on the seat. Still overly-sensitive, but perhaps for a different reason.

My work backpack makes my Golf’s seatbelt chime go off (or maybe it’s the metal coffee cup?). But the knobby things, don’t most cars have them now?

I like that the steering wheel / cluster looks like a happy puppy staring back at you.

They still measure weight but use capacitive sensors instead of switches. Basically you have 2 plates and by changing the distance between them you change the capacitance of the system. Putting weight on the seat decreases the distance between the plates and thus increases the capacitance. It is way more complicated than a switch but it allows you to get an analog reading of the weight in the seat.

The cell phone can screw it up because the RF waves have some potential to introduce additional charge into the system which the computer doesn’t know about resulting in inaccurate readings.

This is it. I put my phone on the seat with less stuff and it was going off.

Interesting & annoying.

BTW, my wife agreed with your parental rant the other day. I didn’t read through the comments though

The comments mostly agreed. There was one whiny dissenter.

I noticed when we were hanging out Sunday morning, that you guys were parenting much like my wife and I have been. I felt validated, because your kids are great.
