That is, if it is truly a 500E; that’s what the badge said, and the subtly flared fenders tend to back that up, but I could be wrong.

Someone where I work has a 500E that same color in similar condition. I looked up the VIN one day and it is a real 500E. My guess is that paint just does that. If it is in fact real, it’s a rare bird. Not many 500E’s and I can’t imagine more than a handful were made in that color.

The *degree* of fender flare is hard to tell from this angle and lighting—since the 400e also has flared fenders, just slightly less so—but it does appear to have the 500e air dam.

Hard to tell at the angle, but as was mentioned, the air dam is correct, and the presence of the R-class and W201 in front may denote an enthusiast (who needs to find a car wash :) ). If it is a 500E and is signal red, this is a very rare color, I have seen only one other in this color (locally, I know the guy who owns it). Production of this color was probably under 25 units. Most 500E I see are black/charcoal or beige/desert silver, but some oddballs exist - green, pearl white, blue/teal, reds. I suspect 25 years of neglect from a time when many cars had paint issues could result in that.
