Did you really need to jack it up?

Turns out no. But I wanted to get a look at the drain plug since I never had done it before. Next time I might not. I need to rotate the tires tho so I’m probably just gonna jack the whole thing up here.

No. I was unaware of these thanks. I made a mess on my garage floor - probably missed a quart of the oil. So I’ll be doing this next change.

Are you going with straight 20 or branching out to a slightly heavier viscosity?

0W20. New short block went in a few months ago so I’m hoping it’ll be less burn-y.

Oil changes on new subies are almost a joy - everything is easy to get to. I can do both our vehicles in less time than just driving down to a speedylube place or the dealer. I get to put great oil in, I know some goofball isn’t going to strip the drain plug, I can do it any time I want and it’s a few bucks cheaper too.

My outback is at 1/2 qt over 5,000 miles with the new short block. I don’t know what to think. As long as it stays there I will be happy.

That’s with 0W20?

Yes, “special subaru” 0W20.

Yeah it’s very easy to get to everything. The jackholes that did the last change overtorqued the crap out of everything though. I needed a custom-fit wrench and a cheater to get the filter loose and I ended up needing an impact to get the drain plug loose which resulted in spilled oil and a slightly stripped head on the plug.

I’m still trying to make up my mind on what oil to use. I swear Mobil 1 was burning worse than whatever the dealer put in. This time I’m tying Valvoline SynPower.

Honestly I am tempted to just buy some straight up mineral oil in like a 5/20 weight. That may allow the rings to bed in a bit better.

The filter placement on the FA/FB engines is definitely a lot better than on the NA EJ engines:

I bought a Lisle oil filter wrench, which helps a lot, but it still isn’t the most fun:

I love with the Foresters how you can easily do an oil change with the car still on the ground. Doesn’t help you though for tire rotations.

That reminds me, the Forester is due for an oil change soon, probably in ~ 3 weeks.
