“slid his dark red Datsun 240Z into the living room.”

yeah...
That Z isn’t really worth it. the article says 240Z which would have been worth it, but that’s a Z31 300zx. If he really wants to save it, get an agreed value insurance policy with comprehensive and let the storm take it, then buy a better one from NM or AZ...

You know - I posted it b/c hurricane and car content (of interest!) and in the back of my mind knew that wasn’t a 70s Z.

That is cold ... but ultimately correct. Scrap it and buy something more interesting.

yeah. I used to be big into Datsuns, and unfortunately that isn’t one. I stick by the first part of that though, without an agreed value insurance policy, if it gets wrecked in the storm he’s SOL. I like the Z31, but they’re still pretty easy to find if that’s truly what you want.

Could have sentimental value though?

I find insurance can be a bitch for cars like these. If it were my Z, I’d save it

Through the late 90's/early 00's I drove a ‘81 280zx and carried comp and collision on it without issue. Had I kept it I would have an agreed policy on it now since it would be worth more than twice what I paid for it...

My insurer refuses to provide an agreed value. I take what they want to give me (1/3 of the value) or I agree to agree to a price when I crash it.

And you’ve gotten appraisals on the car?

I have not. Just what the company told me they’d give me. But $3k is nothing. You can get an MR2 for $3k, but even the cheapest one currently for sale in Australia is $5k.
I think they based their estimate on the fact that it’s a 27 year old 4-cylinder Toyota 2-door. Maybe on paper it doesn’t seem so different to a Corolla or Paseo, but it is.

Agreed, You’ll never be able to replace it on that, but the only way to get them to increase the potential pay out is to document that identical cars in the same condition go for more, and get a certified appraisal. And of course get it re-appraised every few years as prices rise.
In the US I can get an agreed value policy from any number of insurance companies, but I would have to put in the legwork to make it happen. Good Luck.

That’s what I’ll be doing, when I crash it :P I don’t want to do the legwork just now.
