I just spent 8.5 hours running a gas station in Austin.

It was not fun. More people = more stupid, and a sort of critical mass is reached where the stupidity runs away in a chain reaction.

Here’s one thing I noticed, which amuses, but does not surprise me. Because we ran out of regular unleaded, we switched all the pumps over to dispense premium. The premium tank/pump are smaller, so run slower. So when everybody at the station is pumping premium at the same time, it flows really s l o o o o o o w. Sometimes so slowly that the pump won’t shut itself off when the tank fills up, and then gas just spills out of the filler next and onto the ground. This is a huge pita, because we have to then clean up the spilled gas. But here’s the thing I noticed: We were asking customers to limit themselves to X amount of gasoline, so we could keep the lines moving and get people out of there. We weren’t booting anybody out, just suggesting they not be assholes to everybody behind them. EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO DIDN’T LISTEN, OVERFILLED THEIR TANKS AND SPILLED GASOLINE ALL OVER THE FUCKING PLACE. These were also the same people who just went and sat down in their cars, after we told them they needed to watch the pump because it might overflow.

Greed and stupidity just go hand in hand. Also somebody wrote a check, and asked me if it was still May.

Down here in SA I was sitting in traffic after work caused by the line of cars at a gas station backing up out into the road while listing to the mayor on the radio telling people that there wasn’t a major shortage and to just fill up as they normally would. The stupidity is astounding.

You probably saw my post about buying gas this evening. All day it was fine, but when I took my boys to soccer at 6:3o the line at my corner market was into the street. I hope everybody just chills the fuck out. Now just about every station in town is probably empty. Any deliveries scheduled this long weekend?

When you run out of regular, do you sell premium at the regular price? Not that you would be morally obligated to; I’ve just heard of that happening.

Not necessarily. They might’ve cleared out what they had on hand, but there could be more they can get delivered. Just gotta wait for tomorrow or the day after to see.

Also Oppo needs to review our zombie survival plan to adjust for this new information...

I asked the guy at the gas station around the corner and he wouldn’t say.

Although that’s not really conclusive one way or the other. Since they could have one scheduled for 6:00AM tomorrow, but don’t want a repeat of today.

Here’s the thing. We’ve been getting about half as much gas as we normally do... for the past week. But, we also never had any lines or were caught short until today, when everybody freaked out for no reason and came at the same time. If people weren’t stupid fucks, they wouldn’t be stuck in an hour long line for a pump.

We’re on the same delivery schedule we’ve been on for the past week. It’s less than usual. But we’ve also never had a problem with lines or running short until just today. I don’t usually work the gas station (manage inside the grocery store, but will run the station when we’re shorthanded) so I don’t know how it was yesterday, other than what I saw coming in and leaving - no lines. Today? I came in, lines were four or five cars deep, by the time I left - about 10-15 cars deep.

I’d thing it’d be a TDI converted to run on vegetable oil. Or a W123.

It’s self fulfilling prophecy, pardon the pun, but it’s a holiday weekend coming up+people tend to fill up Thursday-Friday for the weekend+people start to see a line, freak out figuring the pumps will run out+stupidity=you do actually run out of fuel. Cycle increases cause people freak out.... you see the pattern. You come home from a normal days work and all of a sudden the news is talking about how pumps are running out, oh better get gas while I can, derp de derp, wait in line... rinse and repeat.

This map shows which stations users are reporting still have fuel. Amazingly it shows the Valero in Helotes as Ok. I would’ve thought with the lines I saw there last night they would be out. Or maybe they got lucky and got a resupply. Anyway, maybe you or your family can get lucky there. I’m hoping the one station in Leon Valley is open and doesn’t have a huge line when I go by.

My sister-in-law lives in SA. She had a lot of trouble getting home yesterday because of traffic caused by gas lines which extended into the street.

My wife is about to make the return trip from south Texas to Baton Rouge. It normally takes one and a half to two tanks with the fill-up happening around Houston. Now she’ll have to take the long way around, so it will be a two to three tank trip and there’s been a run on fuel.

Now I have something else to worry about. :/

It was so dumb. Got stuck near my house because of a line into the road in an area where the shoulders are closed with concrete barriers due to construction. I’m just glad I have an indicated 200 miles of range left that should get me through until resupply starts to show up.

I went to the station closest to me this morning, and while all the pumps were full, there were no lines. I think now that dumb people have had their freak-out, things will go back to normal (price was up 20 cents from yesterday though).

was an interesting morning...... the two here where i live, are out. the shell at the 211 cut across, out, the @, out..... that valero, this morning HAD gas, but it had a line a mile long, at 5AM...... so i skipped it, the shell at 1604 out, the heb was out..... thats everyone on the way....... SO there at work i got sent on a 30 minute break, and decided to go look for gas. HEB had gotten some in, but had a HUGE line, so i passed on them, and went to check towards helotes. shell, still out, valero was now out, and the @ still was out, so i went back to the heb, and found a nice cozy spot in line........ about 12 cars back. i finally got my gas after about an hour of waiting. $30 later i went back to work..... on the way home heb still had some, and the valero in helotes had gotten some in, because the line was back, and there was an officer directing the waiting line...... good stuff. SO there is gas, its just real patchy finding it........ look for the line, thats where its at........

Yeah my wife was in line at the bank right there by HEB and she texted me to say that a tanker truck pulled up and people immediately just started turning off of Bandera behind it and by the time she got done with the ATM there was already a big line. I heard Costco has plenty and I’m a member so I may head up there after work. Like you said it is around so I’m not worried about getting too and from work.... but I still think I’m gonna scrap the trip up to Burnet. Don’t want to waste half an hour of my day off in line for gas.
