I found this 1973 AMC Hornet Sportabout at the cruise night last Friday. It was absolutely amazing! I’m fully convinced now that AMC is my favorite American brand (especially the 1970s, including 1970s Jeep). This Sportabout was spec’d nearly just how I’d want it to be.

Black with the Hornet SC (?) wheels and the 258 ci I6. I’d take mine with a 4-speed from the Hornet SC though.

I absolutely love the pin striping on this car! That may have sold me on the black paint.

I do wish it had the original steering wheel - and that 4-speed.

The vinyl is interesting, too - called “Individual Seat Vinyl Trim”, based on the window sticker.

There’s that pin striping again!

The 256 is torquey, but not high horsepower engine. It sounds great with exhaust upgrades though:

It is/was for sale. I’d be interested if I had the space.

Oh man I think these look fantastic. Black on black with a 4 speed. Yes please.

That’s a seriously clean machine!

I always wanted to find an Eagle wagon, strip the Di-Noc and do the Hornet front clip swap.

The 258 can be made to go a bit better than stock with minor upgrades. A 4.0 HO swap with F.I. is really the ideal way to go.

That would look pretty cool.

I’ve heard the 258 isn’t the best. I know my dad had firsthand experience with one in a Hornet in the late ‘70s. Apparently, it wasn’t very quick, and you could actually see the fuel gauge needle move as you went.

Being fro the same lineage, I’m assuming the 4.o HO still has the character and sound of the older AMC straight 6s - because the 258 with dual exhaust sounds really good in the video in my original post.

I’m curious, what was the price?

The 4.2 is a bit of a dog but with a carb swap, ignition upgrade and decent exhaust it moves something like a Hornet nicely.

Junking the Carter BBD is the key. They’re not even worth keeping as wheel chocks.

It wasn’t listed, and I didn’t get a chance to ask unfortunately.
