They leave the touristy parts alone besides Acapulco. Even if not touristy, they leave the people alone for the most part, especially tourists. Most of the cartel crime is between themselves.

^Eso! If you’re not a corrupt cop or politician on the cartel’s take, directly involved in narcotrafficking, or related to someone who is, you are really quite safe anywhere you go. The cartels rely on the people seeing them as overall positive. The minute their violence becomes truly arbitrary, they lose that advantage.
