Terrible car.

Absolutely atrocious.

It’s one of the many horrible cars that should be displayed in a awful cars museum, to remind people why the biggest automotive industry in the world, almost went extinct.

Feel free to add cars that should also be in that museum.

Yes. My uncle had one. It was like driving a small bus.

Really? I kind of like the way these drive (very trucky). Full disclosure, I’ve owned 3 explorers.

My dad owned an Aviator for about 10 years . He was rather disappointed in the quality of it. But, since he’s a Ford guy, he eventually replaced it with a Navigator.

I actually kinda wanted one. Like, not badly enough that I would’ve purchased one but the ones that I found that were fully loaded black over tan 4x4s in good shape tempted me a bit.

My dad once drove one over an iced covered lake, in March, which absolutely terriffied the Floridian owners. It was halarious.

that doesn’t make it “atrocious” or “horrible,” it just means it was a body-on-frame SUV.

It’s not only the way it felt when driving it. I’m also talking about the way It felt. It felt cheap(even if it wasn’t), it felt flimsy (even if it looked tough and boxy). It felt depressing, even if it was advertised as upscale and aspirational.

The major fault I can find with this era of Explorer is trying to find one without the broken plastic piece on the liftgate, just under the rear window.

Otherwise, atrocious isn’t a word I’d associate with the Aviator or Explorer.

So it wasn’t good because Ford didn’t sweat the details, eh?

First two were hand me downs (a 96, and a 97, both Eddie Bauer) when I was young. I traded the 97 toward my first “car” a Mazda Protege 5.

The third was another 96 V8 limited that I bought circa 2008 as a a beater. It was on transmission #3 when I bought it and was overall in good shape. It needed a wheel bearing so I sold it for $400 because I was going snowboarding that weekend and wanted the extra cash lol. Probably a bad move in retrospect.

Despite their stigma, I’ve had great luck with them. The price of entry is much lower than comparable vehicles, and having one as a first car has always made them feel comfortable/familiar.

Also I can say all of these nice things because after the first two I’ve had at least one M3 in my back pocket. When I haven’t had an explorer, I’ve had/have a Ranger.

No, not only that. You can’t ask premium money and pretend to sell a premium product when you’re selling an Explorer with a different front grille. People are not idiots. It’s one of the reasons Lincoln got wrecked by the competition, for years.

Kinja'd!!!

Now, they’ve taken steps in the right direction, with some products that gets closer to the competition in look and feel.

It remains to be seen how they take on the challenges of a ever changing industry.

The Aviator was more than an Explorer with a different grill.

It also had the 302HP 4.6L DOHC 32V V8... something the Explorer never had.

And it had different tail lights too!
