I have a question for you Oppos who like big ass touring motorcycles. Also, I would like your thoughts on upgrading sealed beam headlights.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

What gives with the Harley or Gold Wing with a head unit and speakers cranked to 11? It can’t sound good through the helmet or at speed, and around town makes you look and sound like an ass.

Is there an appeal I don’t get?

It’s the same thing as people playing their stereos too loud. The thing with the motorcycles is that some are showboating by default on the bike, and peacocking with the radio is just frosting on the cake.

Same goes for assholes on the subway who play their music without headphones.

I can’t stand either. Turn the shit down so it doesn’t bother anyone else.

Two of the guys I ride with like to play their music loud, and when we all come to a stoplight I usually get a headache trying to listen to The Eagles and The Beach Boys at once.

There’s a demographic out there where what is “cool” to them makes others think “ass”. Think stereos (and loud pipes) on cruisers.

I changed out a couple sealed beam lights on the fintail, as one of the old lights finally croaked, and I could only find halogen replacements. No big deal (but I did replace them as a pair, main beams).

Pricey for a sealed beam, but I would stake my life on these being the absolute best headlight available without dropping insane amounts of cash on something custom. They’ll last forever, the housing is made for the LEDs instead of a cheap retrofit solution and they draw much less power than stock lights. Here’s a thread about the 7" round version. It was reviewed by one of the most knowledgeable people in the Miata community, and he doesn’t sell them so he’s probably pretty impartial. For what it’s worth, these are the lights that long haul truckers use.

A clean car always fills me with pride of a job well done. And when the owner ‘gushes’ over it about how much better it looks, I get a bloated ego and can talk wax lyrical about what needed to be done, what was done and how.

You’ve done a great job on the Chaser, well done.

I’ve had a couple bikes with speakers - I didn’t install either, the bikes came with them. I did enjoy riding around down with being able to hear the sound, couldn’t hear shit above 40mph and turned it down at stoplights. Now I much prefer my sena headset, drowns out the road much better and sounds much better as well.

As far as sealed beams go, just buy a higher end one. Way cheaper than upgrading to LED, and focus better as well. Most LED beams lights up great close, but don’t carry well at all. As long as your electrical system can handle the load, just put a nice higher output sealed beam in. It’s cheaper, easier, and looks better (both to you and oncoming traffic) than a LED conversion.
