So at a stop light this morning, I pulled up next to one of these
Light turns green and naturally, the WRX pulls away quicker to the posted speed limit of 35 (not our actual speed *wink*). Well it’s been comfortable in the mornings this week so I had the windows open.
And it dawned on me that I never heard the WRX shift its transmission.
If firgured that even the smoothest heel-toe pilot would let off some noticeable cues of engagement (exhaust note, slight delay in acceleration, etc.), but I heard nor witnessed any of the sort.
So was it a Subie CVT, or is the new Stig a Registered Nurse (specialty license plate in Indiana)?

CVT is an option on the WRX. it’s called the Sport Lineartronic Transmission.

Yep, they started putting the auto in the WRX in 2015.

It’s a Corolla with a body kit, AWD, and a CVT.

WRX CVT seems like such a travesty.

Who buys a bright red WRX and then opts for the CVT? That’s like, I’ll take a shot of whiskey, but wait mix it with 8 oz of water first.

WHAT?! I didn’t know this! I thought it was new! Maybe it was the STI, then? Or maybe I’m just thinking 2015 was the new 2.0 motor and the CVT?
I seriously did not know that...

It’s a bit more complicated;
2002-2008 had an auto - 4EAT
2009 - automatic WRX became Impreza 2.5GT. WRX got power upgrade to 265 hp as well as suspension upgrades. 2.5GT was auto only - 4EAT.
2010 - last year for Impreza 2.5GT.
2011-2014 - no automatic turbo Imprezas.
2015-present - High-Torque Lineartronic CVT is now an option in the WRX.
(For the US market, anyway)

TBH it’s not a option for performance. I’d never tick that box myself, but having timed a Legacy 2.5 at 7.5 seconds to 60 I have new respect for the CVT. At least, for a CVT tuned by Subaru.
Actually what I’d like to see is a manually controlled CVT. As in with a slider where the console shifter usually is.

Haha – they just wanted a Subaru, because that’s what all the active 30 somethings drive. But then they needed to get the most expensive version (that came as an automatic) just so everyone at the yoga studio knows you’re “more successful” than them.

I think they meant to say CVT.

that is exactly why.
I mean, great that subaru is selling more...but at the same time, I cant help but think the only reason they DIDNT buy a STI is because STI is manual only still. if it was auto, they wouldnt be able to build them fast enough.

The new CVT in the WRX has got the manual paddle shift mode - my subie sales guy actually just got one, (silver with the new 18"s,) and he likes it, keeps in in manual mode all the time. But it swaps in one of those electric parking brakes - so no handbrake turns....
