Answer: a lot like the 1980s. Newcastle airport rental car desks. Guessing late 80s based on hair, briefcases and logos.

Not bad, kind of a new wave style with a touch of late brutalist thrown in.
Typical Sixt location, present day (source on watermark):
I hope you like orange.

Yeah it’s distinctive, yet simple, and the materials are pretty inexpensive. I have to admit a bit of a weakness for brutalism though. As for the Sixt, I’m guessing this is what you get when you book a compact:

Is that orange car Mini-based? I swear I remember seeing something like that at BMW Welt a year or two ago.
I have a similar weakness, but for preserved time capsule custom post-mid century residential houses, from the late 60s through the 80s. Like this gem:

Ah, the eighties. Anyone feel like renting a Montego?

Yep, the Outspan Oranges use Mini running gear. Both of those are pretty neat, but I’d take the second, in all its wacky.

Only if it has an MG logo on it.

Some of the carpet in the second one gets to me, but otherwise, I’d leave it pretty much as-is. Much more daring times in terms of design and residential architecture.

Renting a car is one of my favorite things.
