My mom sent me this. I told her that I thought it was either a spark plug, fuel filter, or cat. But I’m an idiot. What do you think?

The backfire is raw fuel in the exhaust. Which happens during a cold or warm start or both? And what type of car?

It’s a Town Car. The weird thing is that it doesn’t accelerate at first, but eventually does.

Hey, Ford was like “yeah, let’s give a bunch of Brits a few million dollars to make a bespoke V8.” They’re golden in my book. The alternative is being Saab.

It’s close to 100k, so that’s a fair option regardless.

The difference being Ford sold Jaguar, GM liquidated Saab.

Oppo is fun, but terrible for real advice.
Sooo, LTC, I’m assuming the 4.6l engine. My guess would be a misfire, either a bad plug or a bad COP. When we’re the plugs last changed? Do new plugs, check the COPs for current. Change the fuel filter too while you’re at it. All of these are cheap and easy maintenance items you can bang out in an hour or two.

Could be a bad ect so the car thinks it’s 20 degrees. But the only way to tell would be a scan tool, are there any check engine lights. It depends on the car but the temp gauge might be linked to the etc or it may have its own sensor. All that being said it could be any number of other things

Need more information on how the engine idles after a cold start. Having limited info I would guess there is an ignition system issue, along with a possible airflow meter problem. A bad airflow meter will cause the ECM to get confused and stumble for a minute, then go into a sort of pre-programed map and take off.
There may also be an ignition issue, and I believe that because of the backfire. Say a few cylinders aren’t firing it will send raw fuel into the system, but that would be unlikely in a cold start since the catalytic converter isn’t hot enough to light the fuel.

I maintain that the S-Type is one of the sexiest modern Jaguars ever produced, regardless of its other qualities.

Stuck valve. Get some oil with extra detergent in it. Plus a gas additive.
The valve issue won’t show at idle and will break free after the backfire.

Recommend a bottle of Seafoam, and a tune up (or at least check the plugs and wires).
