It turned out to be all sidewall flex. 17" Mustang wheels can’t come soon enough.

Don’t you mean handles? Ride can’t really improve with less sidewall flex, it will definitely feel less yacht like with less sidewall though

Both, actually. Even at 38 psi up front, there’s so much sidewall flex that you’d think the rebound damping was too soft unless you got out and checked. The sidewall acts like an undamped spring!

Nope, not S550 wheels. I originally wanted the SA3R-looking SN95 GT split 3 spokes, but I found a deal on a set of New Edge GT 5-spokes that could be hard to pass up.

It’s a 92-97 chassis, so G-body dirt track drop springs up front, and I was running 1968 C10 four link rear springs out back, but they were a bit too firm for crossing the country, so currently I’m running SN95 rear lowering springs with about 1/2" cut off the edge just so they seat properly.

Ah, I was hoping you didn’t just chop the springs.
Personally, I loved the “drive over anything” ride height of the 1996 CVPI I used to own.

How did you narrow it down to sidewall flex?

I can literally set up my camera at any given corner of the car, push down hard on said corner, and watch the dampers take a set no problem while the sidewall keeps flexing.

Yeah, anything S197 or S550 is the wrong offset.

It was nice to have the clearance and comfort of stock suspension, but it also handled like a 3800-lb bag of dildos before I did springs, shocks, alignment and end links.

I was lucky to have the PI suspension, the stiffer springs and sway bars really did make a difference over the civilian version, and a set of KYB shocks helped out a lot too.

Yeah, P71 stuff makes a world of difference. The HPP-spec dampers seem to be doing fine for now, although I’m hoping to go with QA1 dampers next year.
