Obviously doesn’t exist, but which car gets the closest?
I vote the original E28 M5
Balanced, nimble chassis, NA I6 and a 5 speed stick to send power to the back. Yet can carry your family on vacation!
What do you think?

Obviously it’s an Oldsmobile Regency diesel!

Small, light, chuckable, strong aftermarket support, costs about the same as an NA.

Ah thanks, I’ve only ever seen the 3 door hatch

That was my second choice!

I think the 3 series with its smallest engine has always been its equivalent.

Protégé, albeit fwd, is about the greatest handling thing with 4doors mazda made. Their mp3 turbo especially.

I feel similarly, that really opens up the discussion of whether or not the 3 series is the best example of its class anymore

I’ll throw in my two bits for the E36 as well.
While not utterly exhaustive, going back to about 1992 it is the lightest RWD sedan you can purchase (even if you use the heaviest version).
E30 is probably lighter, but we’re getting pretty old now. E23 or 2002 would be lighter, but not a 4 door.
RX8 is also very close, and a tiny bit lighter, but also kinda not really a sedan.

Is 300 sedan?

To me a big part of the Miata is top-down motoring. So I’ve always thought this is the closest thing with 4-doors. Get it with a manual and RWD and bomb down some trails that are too rutted for a Miata and I bet it will be almost as fun.

Chevy SS?

R31 or R32 Skyline GTS-T for old cars. Basically the above M5 but lighter and with a turbo.
Mazda RX8 for more recent. This car even dominates autocross like a Miata does.
