Ah...the old money Range Rovers were so much more understated....and you never found three of them in front of a Starbucks...

Are the range rover classics more or less reliable than the newer ones? I know the newer ones have a slew of issues related to the electrical and air suspensions, so theoretically these should be more reliable since they have neither. But as an example the LR3 was considered a significantly more reliable vehicle than the Disco 2, despite its electrical issues.

Like anything, with regular maintenance they can be very reliable. That being said, the lucas EFI is source of issues, and head gaskets are a regular maintenance item. Otherwise its a pretty rugged truck and they typically aren’t the nightmare everyone assumes they are.

I basically assume anything with “lucas” branded on it will be trouble, but the head gasket is surprising. What kind of problem is it? warped heads? or just a bad gasket design?

The original design of the head bolts, have 14 bolts on each side. One on each corner of the 4 cylenders, then an extra 4 on the outboard side of the head if you can imagine. The install procedure was revised by land rover to eliminate the 4 bolts on the outside, to eliminate the uneven sealing of the gaskets. Hard to explain without pictures, but you get the idea. Over 100k on an engine and its due for a head gasket and probably a timing chain (tend to stretch) and camshaft (tend to wear out).

I just pulled up a picture of the 14 bolt head, why on earth would anyone choose that layout? It makes no sense.

And the factory gaskets are made of tin...

It astounds me that the British can make such fantastic vehicles, then simultaneously make horrific decision on key parts.
