Do you think BMW & Toyota have an agreement about which one will be faster, or will they just share chassis & powertrain and other than that, all bets are off? The BMW will surely be heavier, unless they employ some serious lightweighting tech.

I bet Toyota doesn’t really care what BMW does and vice versa, they are counting on brand bias and price/style differences to drive buyers, not specs. I would bet the Toyota will come one way only...take it or leave it. And the BMW will have difference engines options but still be more expensive generally. each brand is going to sell so few of them anyway that it wont really matter.

Also, coupe vs. convertible. Just wondering how these negotiations are handled: for example, do you think Mazda put any limits on Fiat for using their chassis, or is it a pure part provider relationship?

According to this , there will be 4- and 6-cylinder versions of both the Z4 and Supra, but the Supra will only be automatic transmission. The Z4 30i will have the same engine as the 4-cylinder Supra and the Z4 M40i will have the same engine as the 6-cylinder Supra.

I wish it were not too late for Toyota to announce that they arent using a turbo BMW motor for the supra. Something about Toyotas past tells me they could make a perfectly fine inline 6, and non terrifying surrounding accessories and electrical systems.

Yup. Just interested to know how the top performance model of each will stack up against each other. The FR-S was set up “looser” than the BRZ; I wonder if the same will follow for the Supra.

Has it been confirmed that the motor is definitely coming from BMW?

It would cost them a fortune but I do believe it will be a detriment to Toyota’s reliability cache in some capacity.

I would imagine they hash out the specifics so they don’t get sandbagged, but I would guess that both sides gets what they want - differed platform cost in an age where engineering differences matter less and less compared to the user experience. I mean take a look at Ford and GM right now. They are direct competitors but they are happy to share a transmission that would normally be a point of competitive advantage, because they know that playing against each other will be costly for minimal consumer payback...since they are both headed in the same basic direction anyway.

My expectations are similar to the BRZ/86. Same mechanicals, different body and interior with the added differentiator of the BMW being (mostly) convertible and Supra being coupe. (I’m hoping BMW offers a coupe like previous generations)
If they end up being quite different, then I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Yeah, it seems like a good partnership. I’m hoping both cars are very good, sell a lot, and encourage other makers to compete in the segment(s).

I hope for the love of all that is holy that the supra isn’t a 4cyl.
yes, to get around regulations the JCGT supra’s had a 3S-GTE, but damnit the whole principle of the supra is a 6 cylinder.
May as well call it a fucking celica.

I’m guessing BMW not offering a coupe was part of the deal (unfortunately).

It’s even in the model code document as a “30i” just like the 4-banger Z4.

Hatch for yota and not BMW? M Coupe hatch? If BMW has an M version then Toyota nothing or they get a TRD? You see where this is going.

If its a BMW motor, itll be a BMW trans and cooling and ecu and all that. Whats left for toyota to do? Chassis? Interior? They’re not really playing to the strong suits of the available brands.
When this collab was first announced a majority of us were like:
Bmw chassis and interior
Toyota drivetrain and all surrounding components
Sounds like a perfect car! Buuut now theyre giving us the opposite.

That’s exactly what I thought it would be too. The issue is that BMW wasn’t going to let them stuff a V6 in it but I thought maybe Toyota could lend a hand and tell them “don’t make this very important part out of brittle plastic”.
For all we know maybe part of the deal is Toyota can put their own engine in the Supra and BMW gets to put their inline 6 in their model. Like Miata/Fiat.

I am really torn here as a current 07 BMW M Coupe owner. If the Supra looks anything like that concept hot dayum I will put a deposit down barring hybrid shennanigans.
In all honesty how far are out are we from production even, still so long to go...
