A blank check for each vehicle you own, what would you do?

The 4Runner would get a frame off restoration. Somewhere between clean enough to eat off of and museum quality, and period correct.

The Jeep would get something akin to a Davis Autosports Cherokee loadout. Pictured below.

Show me yours and tell me what you’d do to it.

Miata: Re-painted Ford Guard Green, Xida suspension, full bushing refresh, custom interior, fastback hardtop, Ford 3.0 Duratec V6 swap

Mustang: Widebody, built for handling, stripped out, full on pro-touring race car with a supercharged Coyote, 6mt, IRS, etc.

Realistically, I’d just want an ARB front bumper and a Slee rear bumper for the LX450. Animal strikes are a legitimate concern and fuel/tire storage are definitely needed. If we’re taking silly numbers, I’d also add a Slee belly plate, a supercharged 2UZ-FE swap, and maybe a 4.56 regear.

Complete frame-off restoration for the Camry for shits and giggles. Then add the Scion tC supercharger kit and lowering springs.

The Miata gets a Goodwin Racing Super Street exhaust, Volk ZE40 wheels from the Cup Car, Ohlins street coilovers, and the Recaro seats from the RoW-spec MX5. Also, a ROADSTER badge from the JDM model.

Fintail would get a nut and bolt restoration at MB Classic Center. Although the car currently has a fairly pleasing mellow patina, some aspects of it can show their age, and an as-new car would be interesting. I would still drive it as much as I do today, although I might fret about wear and tear more.

The Bluetec, not much one can do - maybe try a chip and different stock wheels/tires, but it’s a modern MB diesel sedan, not much one can or should do to it.

Or I guess since money can buy pretty much anything, RWD swap. Might as well just buy a different car at that point but the TL chassis and steering with RWD power would be a great handler.

The Raider would get stripped for minor rust repair, full repaint, and undercoating. Old Man Emu lift, 31" Cooper SST Pros, and a Weber carb so it can go up hills. Or maybe a 4BT swap....

If I had to stick with my WRX, I’d lift it, add skid plates, new wheels/tires, a push bar, lights, and a COBB tuner. I’m not a fan of noisy cars, so I’d draw the line on loud exhausts, but I might go with a bigger turbo. I’d also add a receiver hitch so I can put bikes on the back instead of the roof.

Funny thing is, I’d like to do something similar to our Outback.

‘99 F-150 - full restoration, mild lift and suspension equivalent of the new Raptor, build the 5.4 to somewhere in the neighborhood of 750 hp, six speed manual, front and rear lockers. Keep it fairly stock looking, make it a total sleeper, on and off road.

1950 Ford F3. I go back and forth with what I want to do with this that I’m not even sure. I can’t decide if I want a slightly modernized update of the original truck, a period correct hot rod, or a full resto mod. Money no object though I’d probably do a tasteful resto-mod. IFS swap, Supercharged 3 valve Ford V-10 twin charged 3 valve V-10, somewhere north of 1000 hp will do. IRS swap as well with the whole truck on air suspension. Paint it House of Colors Black Cherry, some simple and tasteful wheels, keeping the 8 bolt pattern, keep the long box, and don’t chop the top. A simple interior that is a little more up to date, but doesn’t loose the classic feel. Lastly build a safety cell/cage into the cab and make it as absolutely as seamless as possible.

Bending the rules, I don’t have a vehicle, but I do have a $5 flathead V8 laying around. I’d build a period correct ‘32 Model A pickup hot rod around it.

The 1989 740 sedan - A 1UZ swap with ITBs, megasquirt, lower it. Paint would be the most beautiful white ever with gun metal trim.

Focus ST: the full course of bolt on upgrades, a custom tune, and some sort of suspension that rides better than stock

Mazda 3 hatchback: probably nothing since it’s the wife’s car and she’s happy with it.

Oh, wow. A dream come true.

Wife’s car (2013 Mazda CX-5): Install a backup camera. We’ll be doing this soon, anyway, because my son is beginning to be on the move and I don’t want anything to happen in the future with reversing and not being able to see him. Also, a full detail and paint correction as years of car washes and such have rendered the paint a mess of swirl marks. I’d also have leather seats installed instead of the cloth ones it has.

My car (2016 Mazda6): OEM rear diffuser, side skirts, and front air dam. CorkSport exhaust. Full detail and paint correction. Heated seats. OEM Mazda window visors. Mazda Mobile Start (a $650.00 option that lets you have keyless entry and remote start with your phone).

My truck (1995 Chevrolet S10): Full repaint in its original “Raspberry Metallic” color. Engine swap with a new 4.3 (has 171,000 miles on it now). All new suspension. New tires. New transmission just for the hell of it. New dashboard (current one is cracked). New seats (have a tear in the driver’s one that I hastily patched). And of course a new headliner to replace the sagging one held up by pins.

Current plan (for my 944): rebuild trans with factory LSD, build and swap in 3.0L motor producing ~270hp, stock-looking fiberglass replacement body parts and DIY the bodywork and paint.

With unlimited cash: 968 6-speed with a Guard LSD, 3.2L bored/stroked motor probably pushing 350hp or so, custom carbon fiber widebody, $$$$ top-shelf shocks and struts, and a pro paint job. Because why not?

The other car? Meh. I don’t plan to mod it anyway. Assuming I’m allowed to replace it, I get the mintiest ‘96-’98 Suzuki Sidekick I can find, do frame-off restoration with the best rust prevention treatment money can buy, and build it into a mini expedition rig.

I would do a full M5 conversion to my 540i touring. 6-speed manual, S62 V8, M5 steering rack, M5 wheels, quad exhausts, proper sport button, and the full leather M5 interior. At some point during (or before) the conversion I would get the whole body repainted along with getting all the dents removed. Then I’d install some Evolve headers and an ESS supercharger to get to around 550-600hp at the wheels. A manual, RWD wagon with 600hp would be nice.

A lot of that stuff will probably happen anyways (I already have a lot of M5 bits on the car, like the front bumper, steering wheel, and gauge cluster), but with my current income it’ll probably take the better part of 5 years to get everything done.

I don’t think they ever figured out the cooling systems, haha. The newer BMW’s still have issues with them— but the parts are much more expensive and there are several water pumps to fail now.

At least with the E38/E39/E46 the cooling system is only a few hundred bucks and a few hours to completely overhaul... meanwhile you need an engineering degree to figure out the electric water pump system on the newer turbo engines.

I had to redo the cooling system in my 2000 540it like a month after I bought it. Except in my case it was the opposite— the radiator cracked and sprung a leak (gotta love plastic!) when it was like 110º outside. Miraculously I didn’t overheat and I did the cooling system job at like midnight when it finally cooled down enough to do stuff.
