Today I watched two cars in a row back out of parking spaces directly into this parked FedEx truck. This is why I park as far away from everyone else as practical. Anyway, here’s a sweet clown shoe Z3 with a roof rack I saw a little later.

Some people just pay no attention. The first car that I didn’t get the camera out in time to take a picture of was a current generation HR-V that I’m pretty sure comes standard with a backup camera.

My mother has a Trax with a backup camera and somehow still has trouble backing up. Just doesn’t plan it, doesn’t use the tools available to her, etc. Sometimes I feel like people couldn’t be bothered to park even if they literally had to place a Hot Wheels car inside a shoe box.

To be fair, is that Fedex truck supposed to be parked there? I almost backed into someone because they thought it would be a good idea to make up a spot at a highway rest stop.

I’m not sure how that works. I often see delivery drivers parking in fire lanes, handicap spaces, stuff like that, but I never understood why they get away with it. Maybe it’s some sort of “professional courtesy”, where the cops can rest assured that unlike other selfish drivers, these deliveries will literally take “just a couple minutes”.

Delivery driver here. I talked to a few cops about this since I started the job a few years ago, according to them we’re allowed (or at least “allowed”) to park pretty much anywhere except a handicap space (can’t even block a handicap space), so long as we’re doing it because it’s “necessary” and not deliberately being a dick about it. Fire lanes, across multiple parking spaces, in the street (so long as we’re as far over as safely possible), even fully blocking crowded narrow side streets, all fair game as long as I’m quick about it. It’s a combination time/safety thing. Let’s say it takes thirty extra seconds for me to park “properly” and walk the extra distance instead of quickly sticking it as close to my stop as possible. With my typical stop count an extra 30 seconds per stop would total an extra 70 minutes per day (unpaid because I’m paid by the stop not the hour). On heavier days that 70 minutes would also put me over the DOT time limit for hours working in a day. As for the safety aspect, I’ve had to carry packages up to (and in one case over) 150 pounds. Often due to terrain, stairs, or narrow doorways they have to be hand carried, not put on my hand truck (assuming I was able to fit the hand truck in the van with all my stops). With heavy packages like that the shorter the distance the safer it is for me.

Yeah, you do have to be smart about it, for sure. I’ll only stick it across from parked cars if I feel there’s enough room for them to easily get in and out of the space with me there. Blowing up the photo though, it looks like the FedEx driver did the same and these other drivers are just kinda terrible. Only the back of the truck is across from a space, the front’s across from an end cap, and based on the length of the Tucson that’s running into the truck there’s a good 17+ feet between space and truck, which should be plenty of room.

In fact it looks like the FedEx driver tried to stick the truck in a back corner where he’d be out of the way (as opposed to by the door for a shorter trip). He couldn’t put it in a parking space because it’s a small lot with no pull through spaces, and we’re told to do whatever we reasonably can to avoid backing up (especially if we’ve got a truck without a rear view camera)
