Is there anything special about FL22 coolant? The Mazda 3 calls for it. Can I substitute?

Only if you’re flushing it all out. If you’re only adding to the system you have to use FL22.

Off the top of the head?
As I recall, I believe Mazda develops their coolant systems to carry FL22 which meets Japanese-spec as far as additives and so forth. Other manufacturers I believe permit coolant that complies with less-stringent specs from other markets. The Japanese-spec for additives and contaminants is much more stringent than USDM.
Motorcraft Specialty Green is the same as FL22, and I believe Peak Lifetime Global meets the same spec but is not the same coolant.

Thank you. Can I only get that fromMazda?

Technically yes. Though there are some of those “all makes all models” coolants they sell in parts stores. I would just stick with the OE stuff though. Cheap insurance.

Agreed, and thank you.
I am working on a Mazda 3 for a friend. 4dr, 5sp, 2.0L, 190k miles. I
LOVE
this car. I want one of my own. Are you familiar with the Mazda 3?

Too much so. Worked at a Mazda dealer from 2005-2015, and had a couple, including a 2004 Mazda3.
