The best all-rounder car I’ve ever owned, and the car I’ve liked the least.

That car and I are in an abusive relationship. I love it, I hate it, it’s excellent, it’s boring - it’s time for a change I think.

It’s a very good car, but I have no real passion for it anymore. It doesn’t tickle my pickle as it used to.

I think the problem with your Octy and my Piglet is that they are good if not great all rounders but not perfect at many given areas.
There is always an area you feel slightly let down in because they are grey, neither one nor the other.

I love the torque, the grippy and neutral handling, practicalities of it all, the noisy whooshy turbo, but I’ve never looked back at it while walking away from it in a car park (if you know what I mean).

Well then, make sure your next car has the “Gentlemen’s Function” and you’ll have no regrets.

I’m very boring so Piglet does everything I need but I do from time to time think I should of got the estate, or Dragon Green, or something sportier, etc...
I do however keep looking back at her when I walk away.

You can also add my Passat to that, does a lot of things well but in the end that makes it rather boring.

Sounds like me and my Mk7 GTI. Objectively it is an excellent all arounder. Subjectively it’s a clinical, dull, instrument that doesn’t really ever make me smile.

So the Candy Van is going to be your practical daily now?
I will never forget the sight of that skid plate flapping along on the way back from the europpomeet!

Possibly a UZZ31 OR 32 1UZ Soarer. I’ve found one, but it’s debatable as to what it’s actual condition is..

It still flaps! It’s like a built in speed limiter, any thing over 80 :D
Either the candyvan or the Defender. Basically whichever one is least theft worthy.

Do any cars come with a Boats and Hoes function?

I feel like you should have used the picture of it on the Karrusell for the advert.

They haven’t all rotted away yet? Time was when they were a relatively common sight but that was probably ten years ago. Haven’t seen one in ages.

That’ll be the Superb Mk2 B6(3T).
She was a great girl. Just did everything well but nothing that truly endeared you to her.

There’s still a few around, especially on Gumtree. I thought I’d found one last week, but after speaking to an expert Soarer mechanic and fixer-upper, he pointed out quite a few things on the advert pictures which probably means it not what it (or the seller) says it is. Quite damningly, the car is priced at £3,500 and the guy said he wouldn’t pay £1000 for it, but if I want to buy I should because it’ll buy him his next holiday in Barbados with all the money I’d put through him.

Every time I see one of these, I’m reminded of our tour bus driver while on holiday in Prague:

Never heard of either. Funny the different cars one can find on the other side of the pond.
