When it gets hard to pick out the wear bars, it’ll be getting close to needing replaced.

That, or cracks/missing chunks.

If they’re in otherwise good shape, they should grip better with less tread on clean dry surfaces. In RC racing we ran these tires with practically no tread and describe a well-worn pair (which gives crazy traction on clean dry clay) as something between “ghosts” and “slicks”. They work great.

Now, once you get water or dust, look out. You’ll wish you had tread again.
