His current one has issues so I’m sending him this as a backup machine to use... He requested to install Debian but he does not know about this wallpaper

I would love to be caused to learn about Linux, but I don’t see it happening. I also just missed the good ol’ DOS days of command line prompts, but I have a good head for commands.

I don’t really need the command prompt in Linux all that much anymore. I’ve used Linux Mint on my laptop (I have a Win10 desktop) for several years now and I only know the commands for installing/removing things through the package manager and one or two for system info or network info, that’s it.

Debian is a good place to start, good blend of mucking around with Terminal but you can also just use a package manager as well

I’d never use it for a desktop OS or primary OS but I will say keeping a couple live distro Puppy Linux USB flash drives around is handy.

I tried Ubuntu once and it was awful. The interface seemed as if it was deliberately confusing and there’s like no applications for Linux unless you know how to write/port them yourself.

Yeah, but probably not in this lifetime.

Eh, I don’t mind Win10....I’ve actually had no problems with it at all so far. I also waited until the end of the free period to upgrade to it from Win7 so the most bugs would be worked out, but overall it’s been very solid!

ubuntu sucks
generally the open source versions of apps are nowhere near as good as their closed source competitors
however there’s a lot of good open source software, but you can get them for Windows or OS X anyways so...

I love Linux, I think it’s more intuitive than my Mac.

I’ve used Fedora as a Live USB in order to compile a special android distribution for a single board computer. It’s very lightweight and runs fine on a USB stick, and it’s a pretty good blend of GUI and Terminal operations.
That said, I wouldn’t use Linux as my “Daily Driver” either, simply because I like to game too.

I don’t like the UI. I’ll be a die-hard 7 user until the bitter end.

Codeacademy has an introduction to “the command line” (bash, but really any posix command line) that’s really easy (like all their stuff). If you miss typing commands, you might just love Linux...

How long ago? I started with Ubuntu in 2007, and 2007 Ubuntu is very different than 2017 Ubuntu. Somewhere around 2010 or so I’d say installation got to be easier than Windows, especially if you’re trying to do a clean install without an OEM disk (or OEM iso). The user interface varies based on the desktop environment (unity, kde, gnome, Pantheon and cinnamon are the big ones at the moment).

I probably would, but I have other things that I also love, some of which make money, and not enough time for them as it is. So Linux will probably not happen for me in my lifetime.

Ha. I understand all too well. I wish more of my loves made money....
