The familiar experience of GM ownership. Yesterday the water pump bled out on the driveway... Slap on a new water pump, fire it up with a $130 hole in my wallet and immediately the alternator bearings start making an awful racket. Tomorrow I’ll light another $130 on fire at Oreilly to purchase a new alternator, then something else will inevitably fail within a day or two. It’s a damn shame... I really like this truck, but I don’t know why I thought it would be different this time.
No, I don’t think GM makes terrible cars, I just think I have some sort of reverse Midas touch with them. Ugh.

But why did you post a picture of a turbo?

That’s what I was wondering.

Wow looks like Ford owners know what you are living. Mopar guys find you lucky since it’s only that.

That’s how it goes sometimes. I can’t tell you how much I’ve spent at rockauto over the past 2 months between my truck, my car and a couple family members vehicles. Same thing as you though, fix one issue and another pops up, but at least the weather is nice and the parts are relatively easily accessible.
Also, do you rockauto? Especially for an alternator, you may save quite a few bucks over o-reallys.
Fresh 5% discount code for you too.

One day, that doom loop will end.
And you know damn well that if you give up after replacing all those parts and sell it, it will magically become 100% reliable for the next three years...

Complete facts. I figure the ‘99 Suburban I just sold will soldier on flawlessly for the next 100k.

I’ve generally had better luck with Fords, but I loathe modular engines. Reliable? Sure. Torqueless, gutless, thirsty, horrible to work on and yuuuuge? Those, too.

I use Rockauto quite a bit, ackshully. But, when you have camping reservations for da big eclipse you gotta make sure the tow pig is ready to go on time. I probably could have gotten the water pump in time, then would have been stuck with a bad alternator the night before I was supposed to leave. Plus, if I don’t get the Suburban fixed, I have to drive the wife’s 2016 RAV4... *shudders*

Not kidding I think I saw my first car (1998 gs300, 200k miles when I sold it) driving around the other day.

Just be thankful you don’t have a liquid cooled alternator.

Well, to be fair, you just bought this truck right? So you’re probably catching up on deferred maintenance/neglect, hopefully. And then the circle will stop when you get there.
Hopefully! !

I was told that was a contributing factor. It works better than the regular stuff but once it hits the 5 year mark it’s rated for, it gets super corrosive. Apparently that’s how my water pump died at just 40k kms.

Hmm, does Rockauto also carry 60's GM parts, or only modern stuff? Sounds like I can save some money on a project I’m working on.
