The only Vanagon I’ve seen on the road since I moved to STL almost 5 years ago. I hadn’t seen it in several months, but today it was back. I guess Midwest winters were not kind to these vehicles, hence only seeing one still out there.

Pop top and no kitchen hookups says 85+

Lower molding says 88+

Rear glass says 88+

Grill says 83.5-85

I’m guessing it’s a 88-90 Weekender with a earlier grill on it.

It’s been evolving over time. When I first saw it in 2012/2013 it didn’t have the pop top.

Whoa, that takes a little work. It’s easier to replace the entire roof with a donor camper roof than just adding the top to an existing van.

Perhaps it started life with a sunroof? I have to admit that I didn’t see many sunroof models after the mid ‘80s, especially as air conditioning became more commonplace.

Which is kind of crazy because it was taken with the phone whilst at speed and cropped to remove my B pillar...

That’s a possibility, but the sunroof models are rare enough that’s it’s more likely there was a donor roof.
