cats last exactly as long as they pass inspection.

If the cats bad the exhaust may smell of sulfur on occasion. The only way to see a melted down cat is to unbolt it and look in, or shake it and hear it rattle. If your exhaust has ever been glowing red hot, chances are the cat got fried. If your cars been running rich for a while it probably toasted the cat, because the fuel can burn in the exhaust increasing the heat at the cat past what it can handle but that ties back into glowing exhaust

This. My cats are going on 21 years now and they’re fine. I’ve seen some last just a few and some last decades.

If there is good combustion, they will last as long as the car exists. If there was a defect (does happen every now and then), it will usually happen within the extended manufacturer’s emissions parts warranty time.

That’s fair enough, and frankly if it’s the cat that’s gone I’m perfectly happy just to let it blow out... it’ll get me through the next couple years as far as the inspection goes (next one due this September, then 2 years to the next).

But I’d like to have an idea what I’m looking for when I try to find the noise.

If “good” means “stock setup for emissions regs” then that could be an issue... I had it tuned last year. With that being said, it should be fine because that was just 30,000km ago and the truck only has 104,000km total.

No idiot lights or anything saying my A/F is out of whack or anything like that. I dunno.

does your truck have post cat o2 sensors? you can get a reader and check the aft sensor reading. it should charge dramatically from startup to warm running if you still have a functioning cat.

Theoretically cats will last the life of the motor, they start to fail once they get contaminated. Basically once something on the car breaks and it isn’t fixed immediately it can do a number on the cat(excess fuel in exhaust from running rich, coolant from blown hg)

It’s probably been running rich er for the last 30,000km because I got it tuned. Shouldn’t be super different, though, because the guy couldn’t drag much out of it without knocking... figured too much back pressure because of what looks like an undersized exhaust.

Never been red hot as far as I know. Who knows about the PO though.

The truck only has 104,000km total.

I’m at 60,000. No idea how the PO treated it though, so there’s that. Still shouldn’t be going out yet imo

Yeah... if the UltraGauge will pick it up I’ll try that. If I have to pull the sensors out it’s a no go unless absolutely necessary. When I got it tuned last summer neither downstream O2 would come out... we had to pull the upstream instead.

Thanks.

Richer has better power, 12:1 (14:1 being best for efficiency) is ideal so I’d imagine he tuned in something along those lines. It wouldn’t take too many miles kill a cat.

I doubt he went that high, like I said he wasn’t able to pull much out of it... but it seems it could definitely be the cat. Would there be aftermarket cats that can take the richer mixture?

as long as fuel trim numbers are ok

Really depends on how a car is used. Lots of short trips with condensation in the exhaust, maybe 100k. Long trips, freeway use, 200k+ in some cases. We’re seeing a lot of Mercedes and VWs need cats before 120k, the Mercedes cats crumble internally and rattle, the VW cats set codes. If they’re rattling it doesn’t tend to change when turning, more with revs, and in my experience they rattle most at or just off idle. If the car misfires for even a little while, depending on how quickly it shuts the injector down in the offending cylinder, or you ignore a rich running condition, it can greatly reduce a cat’s life.

I kinda doubt it, the richer mixtures increase soot which gets clogged in the fine honeycomb like structure and makes the catalytic process not happen on top of eventually clogging up flow and leading to power loss. Your best bet would be to just have a pair of working stock converters that you only put on for smogging.

Cats normally last for eleven to fifteen years, then they end up passing away. But they are feisty. I recommend dogs

100k—km or mi? Most of my driving is a 12-15 minute commute. Often ridden hard once it comes up to temp.

Only 104,000 total km though. The last 30,000km have been with a tune, but still...

Thanks!

Oh, I wasn’t thinking of replacing them now... just wondering for when they blow out completely (if that’s actually what the noise is). For all I care I’ll leave them and let them blow out as long as it doesn’t clog instead and still passes the Etest.

Just want to have an idea what to look for and if this should be on the list.

Thanks!

Move to a place with no emissions and cut the exhaust off.

Meh, once every two years on loose standards... ain’t care. Just want to know what I’m looking for. If it’s the cat, as long as it doesn’t clog and kill the power, it can blow its guts straight out the back for all I care.

Average cat lifespan is 12-15 years for pets, or 4-5 years in the wild.
