I just completed the 95K mile oil change on my 2011 Sierra, which means the 100K mile service is on the horizon. I use this truck for work to pull a 7,000lb trailer as well as haul material up to 12' long in the bed. I’ve owned it since new, and I have no plans to buy a new truck anytime soon. In other words, I want it to last me awhile.
Here are the items that will for sure be replaced at the 100K mark, as is recommended in the owners manual.
-Transmission pan fluid change & filter
-Spark plugs and wires
-Air filter
I’ve also already changed the rear diff, front diff, and transfer case fluids at about the 80K mile mark, so those are good.
The questions is, what other preventative maintenance should I do, especially since I really don’t want to break down or have other issues while hauling a loaded trailer, possibly on a customer’s industrial jobsite. Should I just go ahead and replace other wear items since they will have 100k miles worth of wear and tear and don’t have a ton of life left?
-Shocks? They are starting to feel a bit spongy, but nothing terrible
-Battery? It will be 6 years old at the 100k mile mark
-Brakes? Still on the original pads and rotors/drums. Lots of highway miles, so they still have life in them
-Ball joints, tie-rods, etc? They all look to be in good shape. No torn boots or obvious sloppiness. No creaks or clanks.
-Brake fluid? I’ve NEVER replaced the brake fluid in a car. But should I?
-Coolant? Would it be wise to flush out the old?
-Turbo Encabulator? Is there something I missed?
What say you Oppo? What’s worth it to replace before it breaks, and what just opens a can of worms? What’s the most miles you would go before just replacing these items?
My oil change rig.

I always think timing belt, but this thing certainly has a chain, and I doubt they recommend replacing it. I’m guessing it has coil paks, but do you just do those when they fail? Ummm ... other than that, I got nuthin.

The timing chain is a good idea. I’ll have to do some research on that. I think older 5.3s had some issues with the chain, but they may have sorted it out by 2011.

I would do a coolant flush if you haven’t already. And check seals for leaks.

I also have a 11, mine’s a silverado though. At 100, I just did all the fluids; both diffs, t-case, trans, coolant, brake fluid. Also did plugs at this time, no wires though as they are molded to the coil packs. A serp belt is probably getting close on life too so I’d recommend that as well, and you can keep the old one in the truck as an emergency spare. My truck has 190 on it now, and at about 170, all 4 ball joints and outer TREs were shot, you have some time before then though. I wouldn’t worry about a timing chain, but that’s just me.

Yeah - and I think the water pump is easy to get to when you’re in there, but if everything is selfadjusting and there’s nothing to fix, probably best to leave it be.
I have another burner, try to guess it!

You can tell if the brake fluid needs to be changed by the color and touching it if your not sure. For the battery I’d just clean the terminals if there’s any corrosion and the the water level if its serviceable.
I’d definitely do the coolant though.
It probably wouldn’t hurt to clean the throttle body too.

You’ll be good on the timing chain for a bit. 150k or so. Coolant and brake fluid flushes for sure and thermostat

Totally forgot about the serpentine belt. That’s a no brainer.

Throw on a new tensioner and idler while you’re there. Also, I’d do a new water pump/thermostat/hoses somewhere around 100k.

Good call. I’ll have to look into that.

True, I’ve had an idler pulley seize by 100k on my old Chevy truck.
