So here’s what’s happening with both cars. One I hope will be covered by warranty, the other will cost me some monies. Ford hasn’t fixed the aluminum hood bubbling problem on Mustangs since 2005, and mine now has it and it’s 10 days short of a year old.
7.5/10 would rock this hood if they’d let me in an ideal world. It’s functional and stuff.
Of course it’ll spread like cancer if I don’t do something about it, and I’m taking it to the dealership after work to get the ball rolling on this. My concern, however is that even if they repaint or replace the hood, it could happen again....I wonder if the dealer would get me a fiberglass hood instead......probs not lol.
The 931 idles as I reported on Saturday, but only on cylinders 1 and 4. A smoke and leak down test showed 96% compression leakage on cylinders 2 and 3, and a bad head gasket. That’s gonna cost me about $1600 (unless I DIY) and make the 931 cost about as much as I paid for the 944, but it’ll run good no questions asked after that.
So that’s my Monday so far.

The clear choice is to go all BLACK HOOD and to add something incomprehensible in Japanese down the side.

I’m down to DIY this if I can get enough support. I’ll supply all the necessary tools, food, beer, and wine.

Ya know, I thought about asking if the hood could be painted gloss black. But I’d wanna see a photoshopped pic to see how much rice it is.

If you get a new hood from Ford, could you sell it and reduce the cost of your fiberglass choice?

Depends. Just speculating but it sounds like bad prep at the factory- which is probably not what you’d get at a body shop. Typically I see factory finishes that are full of orange peel and other blemishes.

Hm, I dunno. I don’t think it looks all that great (from this angle, anyway). The edges of this gen’s hood don’t make for very good contrast lines IMO:

Access doesn’t look too bad; I bet we could have that head off in a couple hours or so. Then it can be taken somewhere to have the head resurfaced before putting it back on.
You might want to look on a Porsche forum and see if there’s anything peculiar that we might run into. But there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot in the way.

All parts removed under warranty are property of the manufacturer, and may be called upon to be sent back to Ford for inspection/destruction.
Otherwise it is up to the dealer to dispose of it... very rarely does a dealer return the warranty’d part to the customer if the manufacturer decides to ‘scrap’ it.

With the 2005-14 cars, it was iron embedded into the aluminum from rail dust and poor prep. I think nowadays it’s just poor prep.

I plan on it. It’d be cheaper to do the removal, pay someone to machine the head, and reinstall it then have a shop do it all.

I’d consider letting it get worse before dealing with the dealership if it’s not visible. Increase the chance they replace the hood instead of just doing a mediocre repair where it’s localized.

I suppose so. I just don’t want it to get worse then not have them accept it. It’s quite visible when you open the hood. Since I’ve gotta nail in one of my tires, I’ll wait to do it instead of today.

I don’t know why they wouldn’t, the bumper to bumper warranty is 3 year/36k miles and I think there’s a separate longer corrosion warranty too

I got rid of my 2013 Mustang and refused to buy another specifically because of that issue. Had the corrosion bubbling under the trunk lid - cleaned it off, treated the surface, and repainted. Then, had it bubble at the front edge of the hood - had the hood replaced. After that, the bubbles came back on the trunk in the same place and I figured forget it - especially since the dealer mentioned that they’ve seen the issue pop up on replacement hoods as well, so there was no guarantee it wouldn’t come back there.
Since the current Mustangs have even more aluminum (front fenders), I stayed well clear.
If you’re still under the 3 year/36,000 mile comprehensive warranty, its covered. Beyond that, not, since Ford doesn’t consider it corrosion, as the aluminum won’t perforate.
I’ve heard rumors that they’ve done occasional goodwill repairs for certain customers, but they certainly weren’t helpful with me. It seems like they’ve been more generous with owners of Explorers and Expeditions.

Not gonna lie, I thought about you and the conversations we had on this issue when I ordered it last year. I’m at under 1 year/17,000 miles right now so it should be covered. I’ll let you know what happens.

You should be fine on this. Actually, you’re lucky it started now, much of the time, it doesn’t show up until 2-3 years out.
I’m very disappointed to find out its still happening on these cars, I was hoping to go back to a Mustang eventually, but I just don’t want to deal with that stuff again.
Of course, buying a Dodge is kind of the furthest away you can get from any sort of quality assurance, but, hey, 15 months and 30,000 miles in, so far, so good.

Well it depends on whether or not I can have the current work on the car paid off and towed back home before then. I also wouldn’t work on dream cruise day. But it’s a whole day of epicness. I’m sure you’ve seen videos.
I’ll see if I can get a ragtag 924 team together.

I keep forgetting the Dream Cruise is this time of year. I was hoping to have the offroad smart ready for this year. I’m supposed to be buying the lift on Friday so at least it’s still moving forward.
